Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

It would have been useful to have been advised at the beginning that this is a router connected to an external modem.  I have just spent a good deal of time crawling through the router logs to conclude that there have only been 3 PPP session drops since the service was commissioned on 16th April...

  • 23rd at 04:28
  • 26th at 04:01
  • 27th at 05:22

There is no evidence of the loss of the xDSL session, which might have been seen if the router was being used as a router modem.  Precise details of a configuration are essential for offering relevant assistance.

This does not look like an every day event and is probably just BT Wholesale maintenance.  However, given that we cannot see the state of the xDSL session, nor is there any indication of if the modem lights provided contraindications at the time, we do not know if this was only a PPP disconnection (typical of BT Wholesale maintenance) or if this was line xDSL optimisation as suggested by @jab1.

Has there been any such reoccurrence since the 27th?

Thanks for confirming.

With the Hub Two reporting PPP link down could be for few reasons.

1) The Hub Two has lost it's connection to the Openreach modem

2) The Openreach modem is having DSL connection drops

3) There could also be overnight maintenance occurring

 @Townman

With the OP confirming  I use the Red WAN port to connect an Ethernet cable which runs to an old Openreach modem and  after I reviewed the event log the above were my conclusions, you could have saved yourself some time.

Indeed Dan ... though that was mentioned some time after the earlier post with the log file.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

For reference the Hub Two can work with two broadband connections DSL or WAN

For DSL the event log will report on booting or reboot.

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. WAN Auto-sensing detected port DSL WAN

For WAN the event log will report
hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. WAN connection WAN1_INTERNET_ETH connected

After viewing the event log it was clear there was something different as the expected "WAN Auto-sensing detected port DSL WAN" was missing, this lead me to ask the questions following the event log being attached.

1) Are you using the DSL port to connect to the openreach master socket?

2) Have you got anything connected to the Red WAN port?

The OP confirmed he was using a Openreach Modem and the WAN port was being used.

I do agree if the OP had mentioned the Openreach Modem paired with a Hub Two WAN port would have been helpful, but in reality it wasn't a big problem as the event log tells the story.

As they say the rest is history!

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Thanks both, I turn off WiFi on my Android phone nightly now to stop the distraction. I can see in my log that for me every day at around 04:40 I get some CWMP messages. This corresponds with the time I was getting notifications on my phone of the WiFi dropping out.

I can see the CWMP messages continue daily at the same time. There have been both messages with PERIODIC and VALUE CHANGE in them.

Another post on here gave me info about them https://community.plus.net/t5/Fibre-Broadband/Why-do-I-have-a-daily-CWMP-session-on-my-router/td-p/1...

I think that is what my interruption is/was.

Do you know if you can change the time the CWMP session is?

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

@Keithrevis

IMPORTANT TO NOTE; all log messages are the Hub reporting events.

23:41:48, 04 May. CWMP: HDM socket closed successfully.
23:41:48, 04 May. CWMP: HTTP authentication success from pbthdm.x.x.x
23:41:48, 04 May. CWMP: HDM socket opened successfully.
23:41:48, 04 May. CWMP: session completed successfully
23:41:47, 04 May. CWMP: HDM socket closed successfully.
23:41:47, 04 May. CWMP: HTTP authentication success from pbthdm.x.x.x
23:41:47, 04 May. CWMP: HDM socket opened successfully.
23:41:47, 04 May. CWMP: HDM socket opened successfully.
23:41:47, 04 May. CWMP: Server URL: https://pbthdm.x.x.x; Connecting as user: ACS username
23:41:46, 04 May. CWMP: Session start now, server: https://pbthdm.x.x.x, Event code: 2 PERIODIC
23:41:46, 04 May. CWMP: Initializing transaction for event code 2 PERIODIC

The above is a daily CWMP (TR069) from my Hub Two, this message PERIODIC is basically the Hub telling the management system it is alive (switched on)

11:41:35, 29 Mar. CWMP: HDM socket closed successfully.
11:41:34, 29 Mar. CWMP: HTTP authentication success from pbthdm.x.x.x
11:41:34, 29 Mar. CWMP: HDM socket opened successfully.
11:41:34, 29 Mar. CWMP: session completed successfully

11:41:34, 29 Mar. CWMP: HDM socket opened successfully.
11:41:33, 29 Mar. CWMP: Server URL: https://pbthdm.x.x.x; Connecting as user: ACS username
11:41:33, 29 Mar. CWMP: Session start now, server: https://pbthdm.x.x.x, Event code: 4 VALUE CHANGE
11:41:33, 29 Mar. CWMP: Initializing transaction for event code 4 VALUE CHANGE

This message occurred just after my Hub recovered from a 'DSL link down', I have similar messages for PPP link down.

"VALUE CHANGE – value for a parameter that is being monitored has changed"  Hub reporting the management something.

For you; DHCP IP Addresses are renewed every 24 hours, so I would expect that is the cause of you phone dropping it's network connection, not the CWMP activity.

04:40:57, 27 Apr. 5G Client associate from 62:45:6f:79:aa:f2 (IP=192.168.1.107) RSSI=-62, Rate=780Mbps, host
04:40:57, 27 Apr. LAN [ADD] ARP 192.168.1.107 with 62:45:6f:79:aa:f2 from br0(wl0)
04:40:57, 27 Apr. Receive a DHCP request
04:38:15, 27 Apr. 5G Client associate from 78:a0:3f:d4:a8:ce (IP=192.168.1.125) RSSI=-61, Rate=866Mbps, host
04:38:15, 27 Apr. Receive a DHCP request

To change the CWMP PERIODIC event time a reboot would probably be in order, I would expect the DHCP lease time would reset to the reboot time as well.
