Few days of very slow connection ADSL

ADSL usually around 17Mbps. Suddenly it dropped. Last few days around 3.7

Test says profile speed is 4.1

(Had line checked and engineer while back and all was well till now.)

Line is quiet.

Ethernet speedtests / router below

Hopefully a temporary glitch!

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@IanSn Is your D/S noise margin usually that high? I suspect something is wrong - you've only had this DSL connection for 3 days 4hours.

@IanSn

You probably should have blacked out your personal details!!!

What does the following say for your line. Post a screen image without your phone number.

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@IanSn  You could try a single reboot of the router (power off and on again)  to see if the downstream SNRM comes down to a sensible level, although there may well be a line fault as the upstream stats also look to be very poor. You will probably have to report a speed fault.

@jab1 @bmc @RealAleMadrid

Oops, forgot to fade my details...

Uptime date is exact to a powercut. Lasted 1 to 2 mins.

This is stats from around June so, yes, its different! -

7 - Data rate: 944/22191
8 - Maximum data rate: 1196/24552
9 - Noise margin: 5.7/5.0
10 - Line attenuation: 7.7/15.5

BTbroadband -

Not sure how to report a fault.

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@IanSn So long as there is no noise on the phone (Quiet Line Test 17070, option 2), report a BB fault here: https://www.plus.net/help/report-a-problem/broadband/

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@IanSn

To get the normal ADSL speed of around 17 you must be close to the cabinet.

If ADSL suits you needs then fair enough but faster speeds are available on FTTC if required.

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@bmc looking at the attenuation figures - and the  BT checker above, the OP is clearly close to the exchange/cab.

Can see the cab from my window, exchange is just down the road!

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

Lovely lady on phone. Looks like it may have been the powercut as everything had been fine up to that date/time then sudden drop, but changing SNR anyway, hopefully no need for engineer. Keeping an eye on it.

Thanks to all for help.

A side query. I wonder if VPN makes any difference to these things. There's an 'accelerator' on the one I use. I know very little about these things. Could that interfere with speed, etc?

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

@IanSn Give it a week (max) and if the SNR hasn't dropped back/speed increased, come back and ask on here for one of the Help Team to reset your profile.

If you ran the speed test via VPN, that could have implications, but the 'observed speed' on the BTW report suggests that it did not have any significant impact. NEVER use VPNs when carrying out any tests/investigations.

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

Thanks, John, will do.

I have no idea what 'accelerator' is or does. Or how. I switched it off anyway as it seemed unnecessary.

No, VPN off for tests!

Re: Few days of very slow connection ADSL

Had a rash of power-cuts this morning - that's really going to help... 🙄
