IP address changed when router restarted - I need to get back to the previous IP address

Hi, I restarted my router twice recently.  I think I now have a new IP address.  I need to get back to my old IP address - can you please fix this?

@olliemolly If, like most people, you are on a dynamic address, that is not possible. Which 'IP address' has changed?

Hi, can you explain how I can check this?  I assume that I have a dynamic IP address but I'm not sure.

Re: IP address changed when router restarted - I need to get back to the previous IP address

I strongly suspect that my IP address changed when I restarted my router due to difficulties logging into a particular website immediately after I restarted my router a week or two ago.  Are you able to confirm if my IP address changed at this time, and is there any possible way to restore the previous IP address even temporarily?

@olliemolly Where have you seen this 'change'? If it is on the screen shown in the below picture, and you are on a dynamic address, it is not possible to 'get back' to your old one - these are allocated automatically, and there is no manual way of changing them.

Why do you 'need' to get the old one back, please?

Re: IP address changed when router restarted - I need to get back to the previous IP address

I'm trying to log into a frequently used website for which I've forgotten the password for and lost access to some of my recovery options.  I suspect that if I was logging in from a familiar IP then I would be able to reset my password without all my recovery options

Nope - I'm afraid your IP address will be no use to you in that scenario. If you have forgotten your password - I always keep a record,  both written and in my browser - of passwords/access codes etc, as only you should know them, for obvious security reasons.

The website should give you recovery options.

@olliemolly

If you use this link https://ipchicken.com/ it will detail your current public IP Address.

For the line Name Address: if the name ends with .dyn.plus.net then it will be dynamic

Thanks @Dan_the_Van that link is helpful, yes it is dynamic. It sounds like there's no way to recreate the previous IP address unfortunately.

@olliemolly There isn't, but most legitimate website passwords can be recovered/reset by providing the site with the original email address used to sign up.

@olliemolly

Being dynamic there is always the risk of it changing when the connection drops for whatever reason.

I would very much doubt the changing of you broadband IP Address would be the cause, mobile phone IP Addresses change all the time as you move about, so for a site to blacklist IP addresses would seem odd.

@Dan_the_Van I don't think the IP is blacklisted, and in any case, if the OP has 'lost the password', most sites - all those I use, anyway - have a simple recovery/reset option.

OK, @Dan_the_Van - but the OP has 'lost the password' - I can't see anywhere they have claimed the IP has been blacklisted.

@jab1

If it helps I will withdraw any comment regarding blacklisting of IP Address.

I find your attitude towards my posts tiresome
