Laptop interfering with home wifi

Unusual problem with a business laptop used within our home network. For last 2 weeks our home broadband sometimes has issues with latency/ping (upto 800) and reduced broadband speeds down to 10mbs usually mid 30s. Everything works fine until this particular laptop signs onto the plusnet wifi, everything is affected. As soon as this laptop logs off the wifi everything works fine again. I have tried another router but still have the exact same issue. We have tried the laptop in different rooms, with ethernet and extender, but still have issues. Everything seems fine from the plusnet end and upto the router. The laptop in question has been in the household for last few years, but only last 2 weeks have issues come to light.Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Laptop interfering with home wifi

My guess would be that the laptop is uploading a significant amount of data. This will saturate the upstream bandwidth and seriously affect downloading and latency.

Re: Laptop interfering with home wifi

Thanks for prompt reply. I wonder whats changed over the last 2 weeks for it to suddenly impact the signal?
What would be the best remedy for this issue if found to be correct?

Re: Laptop interfering with home wifi

Most likely a software update.

You probably can't do much about it if its a company  laptop, they're usually locked down. You would need to talk to your IT support

Re: Laptop interfering with home wifi

Ps, so probably not a Plusnet router issue, the laptop issue would appear whatever isp router i was using?

If my theory is correct,  then yes. You might be able to reduce the effect if you had a router with QoS support. The best way would be to investigate why the laptop is uploading so much

Im due to change to full fibre 500 soon, would this help the situation if your theory is correct?

Re: Laptop interfering with home wifi

You say your current download speed is around 30Mb normally, so I would guess that your upstream is <10Mb, probably around 7Mb ?

With a FF500 the upstream will be 75Mb so there will be far more upstream bandwidth available. Having said that , its still possible for a device doing a backup to the cloud, to saturate the upstream and thus affect downloading on other devices. However, having a large upstream bandwidth does give the possibility of using a router with QoS facilities to limit the upstream bandwidth that a device can use, thus preventing saturation whilst still providing a reasonable backup performance. Note that the Plusnet router, in common with many ISP supplied ones, doesnt have QoS facilities so you would have to source a better router.
