Slow internet - possible dns issue

I am finding broadband across different devices very slow - specifically to initially connect to websites / services. I believe this may be an issue with router/Plusnet dns. When I change dns on a device to 1.1.1.1 - the issue does not occur - tested across laptop, iPhone and Xbox console. This Suggests that Plusnet dns set at router level is the problem. Tried factory resetting router with no luck - issue has been going on for 2-3 weeks at least. Does seem intermittent- and once connected to a website speeds to fine.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

@grahamjenks Welcome to the forums. What you suggest - DNS issues - is possible, but I think unlikely, otherwise there would be many more complaints. I'm not a network expert, but if you could give some examples, maybe some of the more experienced Community members could help - if they pick this up.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

What is the router version and firmware number please?

Slow dns responses would indeed manifest in what you described as happening. Probably most likely slow from the router. To check this please set a device with PlusNet dns directly 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50, see if slowness disappears.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

Thanks - its a Plusnet Hub One - details below.

DNS on the router is set as:

Primary DNS:212.159.6.10
Secondary DNS:212.159.6.9

As suggested if I try changing DNS on device to 212.159.6.10 and  212.159.6.9 - then speed seems to be fine - so it does appear to be router that is causing problems. Any suggestions on next steps - other than a new router?

Many thanks

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

@grahamjenks Your Hub is way out of date, firmware-wise. Have you always had it connected and switched on? If so, it appears to have 'fallen off' the management platform, is too old to be updated and will have to be replaced.

@bobpullen ?

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

Yes- its always on and connected -  I've been using it since moving to Plusnet - I've not used any other router.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

In that case, you will have to wait until Bob Pullen, who I have tagged, picks this up.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

@grahamjenks

There is another option, if you are close to coming up to renewing your contract you could try phoning customer options on 0800 013 2632 and discuss your renewal discount and request a Hub Two for a cost of £6-99 p&p

Hub Two only has three LAN ports and it is not possible to split the wireless signal names, which may be important to you.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

Unfortunately only renewed in Jun this year, so have 13 month left.

I'll see if Bob comes back here -else will get in touch with Customer services to discuss options. Thanks all for prompt input.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

Router is definitely not receiving firmware updates. Tried another full factory reset but 6 days later still no luck.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

@grahamjenks With f/w that old, it won't receive updates. I'll tag @bobpullen and if he sees this he may arrange a replacement for you.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

Fix

@grahamjenks - a new router will be in the post tomorrow, however bear in mind that we're going into two consecutive days of Royal Mail strike activity.

Re: Slow internet - possible dns issue

I may have the same issue. I've noticed intermittent lag for the last 6-9 months, which I'm fairly sure is not anything to do with wifi contention. Similar to the OP, I'm starting to wonder if it's a dns issue.

I can't find the full router technical info, but here's what you requested from the OP:

Plusnet Hub One | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.289.1.3 | Last updated 12/10/21

Primary DNS:212.159.6.9
Secondary DNS:212.159.6.10

Do you think a replacement router is the best solution?
