Re: New Forum Layout

I have to say; I've never liked the current layout and colour scheme, it might be Ok for a site aimed at CBB's perhaps, but personally I'd prefer something a bit more sophisticated, but then I'm a bit conservative that way.
Practically anything you do with it will be all right by me, as long as it doesn't look like a kids party with balloons and streamers all over it.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Does the "Hardware" forum on the new layout cover this?

That's a rather pointless question – if it did cover it, I wouldn't have written a paragraph in my previous post saying we needed a board to cover it. We already have a hardware board in use now but that's for computer hardware (i.e. components and peripherals), not gadgets and the like. It's therefore inferred quite strongly that the new hardware board would have the same remit. I guess you could transform the new hardware board in to a ‘hardware and devices’ board, then make it clear in the board description what exactly belongs in there.

Re: New Forum Layout

If I have a software issue, why would I post it in the hardware board?
Surely the hardware board is one pertaining to nuts and bolts of hardware.
Drivers etc are all software (and in some cases firmware) never hardware.

I think it was a fair question, as I don't think the new board has the same remit as the current one with a description like this:

This board is the place for all hardware questions and discussions.

If that's too broad then maybe we can refine it a bit?  I like Hardware and Gadgets Smiley
Also, I don't personally see why iPhone posts in the Mac/Linux section would be a problem.  iPhone runs a version of Mac OS does it not?  Perhaps we could call that forum Apple/Linux instead?

Since most home routers run Linux, why not put routers in the Linux section as well? Cheesy

I think you need to remember though that people will not generally think of as a phone, MP3 player etc. as ‘hardware’. When people normally talk of hardware, they're talking about printers, scanners, motherboards, PSUs, etc. etc.. So something needs to be done, be it a new board or a clarification of the proposed one, and I agree that making it in to ‘Hardware and Gadgets’ would be a positive step in that regard.
As for your point about the iPhone, yes the iPhone could probably have a home in the Mac OS X forum. But I was just using the iPhone as an example of one type of gadget as it seems to be the most commonly discussed one. What if, for example, someone wanted to discuss their Symbian-based smartphone? You see, we do need somewhere for those kinds of discussions.

Re: New Forum Layout

Quiet here init …?
Some 1000 topic views have resulted in 50 votes, almost equally split between the two options. Huh
Since 50% will be disappointed with whichever is chosen, I suggest trying it at the top first - a new approach. Move it to the bottom if experience and the consensus view supports that after (say) 6 months.

Re: New Forum Layout

Why not put it at the bottom if there is an 'r' in the month?

Defeating the purpose of the poll is it not? Which i might add would be dissapointing to the other 50% that has voted for it at the bottom? Myself included Cheesy

Re: New Forum Layout

As the current result shows a clear (OK - a bit marginal then  :-[)  decision to go for it at the bottom and no new votes for a while we are going to close the poll tomorrow afternoon and get on with the work.
If, after a while, the majority don't like it we can move it to the top (apparently moving it around is relatively simple - that is my impression from comments by staff as my knowledge of the coding involved is non existent).
P.S. - I still don't like the garish pink stripes  Sad

Re: New Forum Layout

I think the current result shows a "couldn't care less" attitude - indeed, since it ain't broke, why change the forums at all? Smiley

Re: New Forum Layout

Have to agree with you there Jeremy.  There's little interest in change.
