New feature ?....... Remove Post

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

You have fallen into the trap !
If 'picbits' was able to delete that entry, then your post wouldn't make sense, or at least cause many people to unnecessarily re-read the thread.
Can you imagine what happens in a complex argument with multiple contributors, when one person starts deleting entire posts, and then denying what they had previously said at a particular time (which has now disappeared entirely).

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

Why is it not allowed to report one's own post?
There are circumstances where one may really want a post deleted and reporting to a mod with a request to delete would satisfy the requirement while keeping a sane control instead of the current "You can't report your own post to the moderator, that doesn't make sense! "

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

I don't know as it isn't an option in the permissions we can change.
It just has the ability or otherwise of reporting a post

@'w23' - Under those circumstances, why wouldn't you just 'MODIFY' the offending post to say -

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

There's always the option to edit the post and use strikeout (the button with an s on it) and add a note to say why you've deleted it. That's far and away the most friendly with no chance of the sense of following posts being a mystery!

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

I was thinking of circumstances where, perhaps, you have a couple of tabs open on your browser and you post a reply in the wrong one (posting completely out of context) for example. It would be tidier if, having immediately realised your mistake, you could have that post completely deleted.
Yes, you could just delete all the words and mark it as [Deleted - wrong post] or whatever, I guess you could PM a moderator to request compete deletion (but 'reporting' the post presumably means it's picked up by whatever moderator is available).  I'd rather be able 'report' one of my posts where I'd deleted the contents to request its complete removal if only to keep things tidier - particularly in support threads.

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

What is often done in this situation is to report the post immediately before asking that the following post be deleted
As a point of interest we don't have the ability to delete posts but only to move them to the hidden board - called Thread Storage - so that they can be resurrected if needed.
The removal of the ability of moderators to delete posts was done after an unfortunate instance where an entire thread was deleted by accident and couldn't be retrieved

Thanks Jim, I honestly didn't think of that - that'll do me nicely  Smiley (except I'll probably have forgotten by the time I next want a post of mine deleting).  Lips_are_sealed

Re: New feature ?....... Remove Post

The whole subject is a rather interesting one, and with legal considerations. Firstly, however, I don't know about the (crap) software that this forum uses, but I do know that with vBulletin it is possible to 'soft' delete, where a post or thread is removed from public view. I guess it is much like that which Jim has already mentioned; moving to thread storage. It is also possible to set moderator permissions where only certain moderators/admin can 'soft' or 'hard' delete. I don't think there is any good reason not to have a delete feature available to select moderators and maybe even members for their own posts.
Most forums I've know are set up to never hard delete anything, and as far as I understand, this is as a result of the possibility of legal action in regard to any post. e.g. Nefarious poster posts inflammatory material. Moderator removes post and adds comment to explain it has been deleted and issues a warning to the original poster that similar postings may result in a ban from the forum. Original poster (perhaps thinking that delete actually means deleted forever) kicks up a fuss stating something along the lines of 'I didn't say that, you are libelling me. I am going to sue.' Forum has the evidence in any such instance.
Where it gets more interesting is when it comes to who owns the 'data'. Many websites openly acknowledge, and I think it is generally accepted, that when you post something on a forum or website the text and their images (say, your own photographs or artwork) belong to the poster. From that point of view it is unreasonable for a forum not to allow members on a website to delete their own data or have it removed. That said, it is also likely for many a site to have T&C clauses which grant them perpetual licence to use and/or store anything which a user may post (and probably to cover their arses in the possible event of legal action).
