I have come to the conclusion that Lithium forums are constructed from a (undefined) set of modules, some of which may be linked to each other, but they are not properly integrated, and due to timing issues that can arise at various times for a multitude of reasons, inconsistencies in the information displayed in each of the modules may well (do) arise

I am looking into getting the counter for private messages and notifications to get updated when the menu link is clicked (similar to the way the top 3 items do). Will be doing some tests to see what I can do and am already in contact with Lithium devs about it on their developer network.
