I just used the colour change option to change it.
it doesn't need to be blue - who posts in this colour
There are many options and most of the ones listed here work http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colornames.asp without resorting to Hex Code

I have seen coloured posts but they tend to be by people who don't generally use acronyms anyway.

It's also impossible to tell if [abbr=View My Broadband Usage]VMBU[/abbr] does anything in IE 8 as far as I can see on Win XP.

The way the abbreviation is rendered (or not) is totally down to the browser. If you look at the page source where it has been used it uses standard html markup:
