Read messages appearing as unread!

So what's going on here ?

I suddenly get the red balloon telling me I have 12 new notifications -

Clicking the avatar, it still says I have 12 new notifications -

...but there are no unread messages, or PMs, and I haven't suddenly had 12 'Thanks' !

I do have a working browser history, no script blocking, ad-block is disabled for this site, I've only been using a single PC, I'm not in 'incognito mode', and my browser and network is fully working as far as I'm aware.

Any ideas that I can keep an eye on, to see if I can spot a pattern to this random behaviour ?

Did you have another tab open and opened the notification feed in that other tab? The red bubble (and the number displayed next to the text 'My notifications') are displayed on page load. The number of items next to the bell icon are fed in by ajax and will update when you click to reveal the menu.

I had a single browser open, I was down to a single browser tab, then (as I most often do) clicked on 'https://community.plus.net/t5/forums/recentpostspage/post-type/message', the page reloaded as expected, but the red balloon appeared with an unexpectedly high number of notifications.

Doing a full page reload doesn't change any of the spurious notifications that I have reported.

Have I not said as much, has that not been clear? I have been complaining as well, to complain any harder would entail me breaking forum rules, using unprintable language and making what would come across as personal attacks

Yet another example of Read messages showing as Unread   I saw a thread of interest in the latest posts module. I went and read the whole thread. I was not logged in at the time. I decided to reply and logged in.
I made the post and returned to it after posting. After refreshing the Home page, the post and thread were still showing as Unread!
I re-read the thread - I was logged in! I refreshed the Home page and the thread and posts still showed as Unread.
Only after I clicked the link of the message number of my post and then refreshed the Home page did the status change to Read

Well I've just discovered another anomaly in this Read/Unread saga. I went looking for something I couldn't remember if I'd posted about recently and decided it might be easiest to look through my recent posts (clicked on the > of the module).
This started when I'd read another post, decided to come back to the thread later, so marked that post in the thread as Unread, which I do sometimes.

On scrolling through my recent posts, I then spotted that every single post that I'd made in that thread (where the other user's post was that I'd marked unread) was now showing as Unread

I then check the number of "Unread" posts on the board listing. Now whilst it didn't seem to make any difference to the count (at the time), this sort of inconsistency shows that the whole thing is flawed.

Exactly what issues to do with this Read/Unread status have been raised with Lithium @jaread83 @LouisaMartin ?

We haven't raised an issue on this just yet as there are a lot of different scenarios to take into account and we can't pinpoint the origin of the issue on our end. For me, I have found that on the page with all of the boards displayed that sometimes there will be a couple of 'new' items showing on the main board element but when going into the board itself I can't find anything. It could be that a post has been editted that I had read before but its flagged as being 'new' but not displayed as 'new' when viewing all the threads on the board?

@LouisaMartin, could we get some feedback from Lithium about how the system knows that a post or thread is unread? It's causing all sorts of confusion here (myself included).

I believe that there is sufficient evidence from a number of respected reporters to at least have this reported as a problem to Lithium for them to either initiate an investigation or to better explain the anomalies we are all seeing.  With their knowledge of what should be happening they may even produce some direction for our more localised investigations?

I'll second that - happened again this afternoon on two threads I regularly interact with.  It would be good if there was some response from Lithium on a 'Fix' for ANY of the problems we have reported.
