Help setting up android phone

PN have been unable to help me.

I am setting up my wifes Samsung phone for email but the settings I have found on the PN site havent got it working yet. Thge PN agent say I yhave a domain that changes a bit how its set up.

Lest say my wifes email address is wife@domain.co.uk  as opposed to wife@domain.plus.com

What are the setting I need to setting up the imap incoming and outgoing servers?

Re: Help setting up android phone

@woldsweather Assuming you are trying to use the Samsung Email app, You will need to use the 'manual setup' option as described here https://helpdesk.realworld.net.au/hc/en-us/articles/115005199067-Guide-Setting-up-an-IMAP-email-acco...

Taking your example of email address wife@domain.co.uk

Use wife@domain.co.uk as email address

Use wife@<accountname>.plus.com as username ( I think wife@domain.co.uk should work but not completely sure?)

Use the password you set for the wife mailbox

Incoming IMAP server is imap.plus.net , port 993 , Security SSL

Outgoing SMTP server is relay.plus.net , port 587 , Security STARTTLS

Use the same username/password as above for Authentication if you will be sending from a non-Plusnet connection e.g mobile data

Hope that helps.

Re: Help setting up android phone

I have been using this:

for username my own is domain+trevor

I have tried username  wife@domain(orusername same name).plus.com

but this doesn't work. Theres no option for STARTTLS in ther outgoing server settings

Re: Help setting up android phone

for username my own is domain+trevor

There are two ( possibly 3 ) options for username

1) <accountname>+<mailboxname>

2) <mailboxname>@<accountname>.plus.com

3) <mailboxname>@<domain> (where the domain is hosted by Plusnet)

I'm never sure if 3) works and I no longer have a PN hosted domain to check.

1) and 2) will definitely work but note that if its a secondary mailbox i.e not the default , then the password is the mailbox one ( set in 'Manage my Mail' in the member centre.

If there's no STARTTLS , try TLS , if that doesn't work try SSL port 465 (although that is depracated)

TBH although I do have a Samsung phone, I've never used their mail app. I've always used K9 mail https://k9mail.app/ on all my Android devices

Re: Help setting up android phone

(3) does work … you might recall I tested this recently.

It would help if we had the details of the reported (experienced) error.

No STARTTLS option - some email clients are a tad shabby in handling this space, either in not supporting it at all or supporting it but just referencing it as the ilk of “Use SSL” as does the iPhone.

If the device / app is deficient in not correctly supporting STARTTLS on port 587, then use the obsolescence supported on port 465 with SSL encryption.

@Townman thanks for confirming that. I did have a vague (I blame the statins!) recollection of that but couldn't find the thread🙄

Re: Help setting up android phone

In desperation heres' the settings on the phone.

woldsweather+june certainly went in somewhere  to differentiate that mail box and mine, and pretty certain its where I have it here.

I lost my own phone (in the house!) and have just received a replacement so now have that to set up so I expect more grief. I shall sell the previous when it turns up.

I just set up email on my new phone from memory in 60s and it works!

That looks right to me.

Check you have the correct password though. Try logging into webmail https://webmail.plus.net/ using the same credentials

Re: Help setting up android phone

I changed the password to what I expected it was and it still works in Outlook 2020 on my desktop PC.

Re: Help setting up android phone

All looks correct to me.

In that case I suggest giving up with the Samsung email app

Re: Help setting up android phone

Yes, I've used k9 for a few years now.

Again, you'll need to use the manual setup . The configuration is very similar .,the only difference being that it will accept STATTTLS on the outgoing server
