How do you use your own hosted domain name to receive emails on Plusnet?

Hi - my domain name is hosted by Plusnet but despite the posts I’ve read on this forum I can’t work out how to receive emails addressed to my domain email address. For example, say my domain name is advent.co.uk and I want to receive emails addressed to john@advent.co.uk via Plusnet, what’s the procedure?

if anyone can come up with the answer I’d be very grateful as I’ve spent a lot of time trying to crack this!

Many thanks.

Re: How do you use your own hosted domain name to receive emails on Plusnet?

Using your example...

Login to the member centre and go to 'manage my mail'

Create a mailbox called john and enter a password for it

In you email client add a mail account using the email address john@advent.co.uk. Use <yourplusnetaccountname>+john as the username for the incoming server and the password you created for the mailbox. The general server settings are here https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

To explain a bit more, when your domain is hosted by PlusNet , mail is received for both <name>@<yourplusnetaccountname>.plus.com and <name>@<domain>  addresses into the mailbox <name>

If you have a legacy account which has both email and a domain name attached to it, then email sent to john@advent.co.uk will be delivered to john@youraccount.plus.com

You configure your email application as follows...

  • Email address john@advent.co.uk
  • Username youraccount+john
  • Password - that for the mailbox john
  • Inbound server - imap.plus.net
  • Outbound server - relay.plus.net

Thanks very much - you’ve made it very clear but I still can’t get it to work.

I’ll give it a day or two before I try again.

Thanks very much - I followed those steps but still can’t get it to work.

I’ll let my head clear and then try again at the weekend.

Re: How do you use your own hosted domain name to receive emails on Plusnet?

Can you please describe how it is failing?

To be clear when was your domain hosted by Plusnet?

If you look up your domain on Nominet UK what is its status / ISPTAG / name server address?

Re: How do you use your own hosted domain name to receive emails on Plusnet?

Thank you.

My domain name was transferred to Plusnet several years ago but I’ve never succeeded in using it for email since.

This is the Registry shown by Nominet: https://rdap.nominet.uk/uk/domain/mailbox5.co.uk . Is that what you were asking for?

Am I right in thinking I need to set up a new mailbox first - as you’ll see from the attached photo there’s a Plusnet footer which obscures what I need to access and I can’t get rid of it.

Any solution would be very much appreciated.

Oh that problem!! Resize the browser window and the footer will shift out of the way.

Re: How do you use your own hosted domain name to receive emails on Plusnet?

I would park activity on this for the moment.

That domain name does not appear to have an active name server - in other words there is no name resolution available to determine to where to send emails @mailbox5.co.uk

The domain registration was last updated on 11th November 2022.  The domain is in its renewal period ... but the renewal date is more than 12 months way - something is not right here and it is nothing to do with the mailbox settings.

@bobpullen - are you able to assist please?
