Restart Sunday

Now the Plusnet hub is quite good, reasonably reliable but on occasion it can get unstable. Downloads slow to a crawl, Netflix taking ages to start etc. So I’ve instituted an avoidance plan. I restart the router every Sunday. Sunday morning actually when no one’s using it. It seems to clear anything that’s being going wrong and perhaps about to go wrong.

Re: Restart Sunday

If you did that using a programmable plug-in mains timer, you could automatically schedule your router reset overnight (early Sunday morning), also if you programmed the 'off' time to be greater than 30 minutes (preferably at least an hour) - then you would reduce the chances of DLM reducing your line speeds, as it is believed that reboots or resets under 30 minutes may contribute to the line errors recorded by DLM that it will subsequently take into consideration when determining line sync speeds and SNR.

Re: Restart Sunday

When I was on a (long/poor) VDSL line I restarted my router once or twice a week, I found that the time of day made a significant difference to the connection speed, in the evening, night time and early morning the data rate was always lower because the background electromagnet interference was higher.   Restarting the modem in the morning once the sun was up produced better results for me.

If I turned the router off overnight (to save power) and then on again later in the morning - it was beneficial to the data rates and seemed to improve the way DLM impacted my line.

However it seems a lot of people warn against the impact of regularly turning the router on and off because it doesn't really save much electricity and probably shortens the life of the router.

Luckily we are now on Full Fibre.  I now have a synology router and they seem to recommend a regular router restart. I have this configured in the router software to happen early morning once a week.
