At a rough count:

The one wired computer, a couple of laptops, two iphones, 1 x Buffalo Terastation, HP Printer, Gigaset N300 voip, 3 x Ring cameras, a Roku stick (which keeps connecting to the rogue network even though it is shows as my wifi),  1 x Tomtom satnav, an air purifier and I finally got the dishwasher reconnected.

Nothing new in there (as in all older than a few months, this problem only surfaced on Sunday we think)

Does anything have both a wired and wireless interface ?

I'm thinking, could  something have a wireless connection to the BT hub with it bridged to a wired interface , connected to your hub ?

Do you have any Powerline adapters at all?

If you have an android phone handy, I suggest downloading this network Analyzer app

and running the LAN scanning option. This will show you all the devices on your lan. 

The issues you are seeing are symptomatic of having multiple Dhcp servers active on your 

network.

I asked that question (Ethernet over power) and was advised that there are no WAPs ... though an ethernet 'bridge' over power presents the same risk of cross connection with a neighbour.

Looks as though there are two DHCP servers in here! [ @Protech types faster ]

Thanks for replying

Two old Solwise powerline adapters, neither of which has wireless. Forgot all about them as they are well hidden behind a shredder and the printer. Only there to connect the printer, as some devices seem to prefer a printer which presents as wired rather than wireless (no, me neither ) I've taken them out and reconfigured the printer for wireless (it has acquired a correct ip address).

Sorry about that, forgot about the two ethernet over power as I was thinking purely wireless at the time. I did have two wireless bridges (TP-Link TL-WR702N and TP-Link TL-WA890EA but disconnected these as soon as the problem arose. Didn't cure the problem.

Would be ironic if it turns out to be the powerline adapters as they can barely speak to each other less that 10ft apart never mind the neighbours

Whether the Powerline adapters have wireless capabilities or not is irrelevant. If not encrypted with a unique passphrase, then there is still the potential for cross-communication with another set of adapters that are on a neighbouring electrical circuit. I'm struggling to understand how your symptoms can be down to much else to be honest.

See here. I would recommend you completely disconnect any Powerline equipment and evaluate whether or not the symptoms persist.

Thanks so much everyone for your help.

Everything this morning is as it should be, and the powerline adapters are in the bin (sorry, small electrical recycling). They must have been in service well over a decade, maybe even contemporary with the article @bobpullen posted. I know I was aware of encryption back then but obviously did not bother to implement.  It probably wouldn't have mattered at the time as I doubt our neighbours then had networks. So they just sat there hidden away until last weekend when presumably a neighbour plugged in another unencrypted adapter...
