Static IP not enabling

Joined Plusnet a few days ago and paid the extra fiver for a static IP. But when I try to active it, this is what I'm presented with:

"Current Status :  You are currently using a dynamic IP address"

I've seen other members with the same problem but thought it best to start my own thread rather than clog up theirs.

Can you sort this please?

Ta very much.

Re: Static IP not enabling

@Dr_Pepper

Welcome to the Plusnet Community Fora.

I presume that you are aware that after it has been activated by Plusnet that you need to reboot your hub to pick it up?

What are the first three octets of your public IP?

Re: Static IP not enabling

I am aware of that, yes. But I don't think it is activated yet which is why I wanted someone to give me the thumbs up so I wasn't just rebooting for no reason (if that makes sense).

Re: Static IP not enabling

The definitive test is to check the rDNS using nslookup on your IP. If its dynamic it will say something like <ipaddress-dyn>.plus.net , if static it will show <accountname>.plus.com

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Static IP not enabling

Very useful. Thank you.

It's definitely dynamic according to your information.

Re: Static IP not enabling

@Dr_Pepper you will need to wait for a staff member to come along and sort it. The online static IP requesting process seems to have been broken for a while...

Re: Static IP not enabling

Fix

Hi @Dr_Pepper

That should be sorted for you now

If you reboot your router you'll get your new static IP

After the 3rd of November I will have a limited presence here as I have moved to a new role

Re: Static IP not enabling

There appears to be a whole netblock of IP address space allocated to Plusnet which may be lacking some rDNS.

https://www.whois.com/whois/31.185.128.0

w.x.y.z is within that IPv4 netblock.

C:\Users\user2>nslookup 31.185.128.1
Server: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49

*** cdns01.plus.net can't find 31.185.128.1: Non-existent domain

C:\Users\user2>nslookup 31.185.191.254
Server: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49

*** cdns01.plus.net can't find 31.185.191.254: Non-existent domain

(I've checked rDNS of IP addresses within that allocation block and they all appear to have no rDNS).

(sanity check on the nameserver)

C:\Users\user2>nslookup 212.159.13.49
Server: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49

Name: cdns01.plus.net
Address: 212.159.13.49

(that appears OK)

Other rDNS checks on other Plusnet allocations have returned (mostly) dyn rDNS.
