FTTP available in the next road but not for me - same exchange

I'm hoping you tech savvy people can explain this to me.

I live in a small village in Norfolk. When I look for FTTP   it is not available on the BT wholesale checker for my telephone number. However when I check my neighbour's number  - they live literally in the next road -around the corner. For them the wholesale checker says FTTP is available "FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered". it also says that "The exchange is not in a current fibre priority programme". The numbers are both showing the same exchange and the same cabinet. When you put the addresses and postcodes into the BT.com website full fibre is offered for my neighbour but not for me. Annoyingly I can see the cabinet across the road while they are a bit further away.

My neighbour got an invite from BT for a full fibre installation and it's happening on Monday. He currently gets a download speed of 75mb but isn't sure what he will get after the job is done tomorrow but he's expecting a big improvement. The way it was explained to him was that they have installed lots of back boxes on the poles down the road , apparently each one of those has 4 to 8 fibre points in them which join to the cabinet , so that means fibre cable is running to the poles , bt have said on Monday they will now be running a fibre cable from one of those points to his front door, where they install a box on his property that the new cable is connected to. He then assume they run an Ethernet cable from that box to my hub.

Does this make any sense.

@the_groundsman

What does the following say for your address.

https://www.openreach.com/

Have you tried the Address version of the Checker - enter your post code only and select from the drop down list.

An install involves a Customer Splice Point (CSE) box on the external wall. The fibre is then brought in to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on an inside wall. You then connect a router vai an ethernet cable.

Thanks Brian - That site says "Superfast  up to 80Mbps" so that is consistent with my original post.

Re: FTTP available in the next road but not for me - same exchange

I've taken a look and can't see what the issue could be.

Try filling out this form https://www.openreach.com/forms/fibre-broadband-availability---customer-form

It'll be seen by Openreach's fibre enquiries team who should be able to take a closer look.

Let me know what they say.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: FTTP available in the next road but not for me - same exchange

Fix

@the_groundsman

I assume the OR site didn't say anything about FTTP being "planned"

The boxes on the poles are Distribution Points (DP) aka Connectorized Block Terminals (CBT).

The fibre does not run to the Cabinet but will instead feed back to a larger Exchange that has an Internet Head End which connects to the back bone on the Internet.

You might be able to check this. Note the Cabinet and Exchange shown on the phone checker for your neighbour. Then run the Address version, entering the Post Code only and select the address from the drop down list. Does the Exchange name change? It does on mine.

The speed received will be dependent on the package ordered but should be close to maximum.

Brian

Edit : Forgot to mention this. If the pole serving your house has a DP on it then it would appear to be a OR datgabase problem.

Re: FTTP available in the next road but not for me - same exchange

So

I heard back from Openreach and also had a chat with their engineer who was at the cabinet today. The engineer told me that they had no end of problems in the next road so getting fttp for those guys was their prioirity. He also confirmed what I learned from Brian @bmc ; that the fibre runs all the way through to the exchange. Hardly any properties on the exchange can currently get full fibre but they are working through the problem areas first. They would expect everyone served by the exchange to be able to order full fibre within 6 months. So the big learning for me has been that looking at exchanges and cabinets doesn't give the info needed.

Openreach's email said that work should start on my immediate locality in October.

I think I've got my head around it now so Thanks to you all for your help.
