Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

I upgraded to Screenshot_11-3-2025_8811_www.speedtest.net.jpeg 500 last week and my speeds are consistently way below, around 50mbps download speed, this is now slower than what I upgraded from! What could be the problem?

@mpsoborne what product were yo on previously,  with whom, and how are you measuring your speeds - wireless or wired?

Plusnet Unlimited Fibre Extra was my previous package. I'm checking speed using wirelessly, I don't have a spare ethernet cable. Nothing else in the house is currently using broadband.

@mpsoborne

To isolate this problem you really need to get a wired connection to the router to test with.

Currently you have two potential problem areas: the connection between your router and Plusnet, and the WiFi signal within your home.

Ah, so you switched from FTTC to FTTP. Did you run, or did the installation engineer run, a speed test when he had completed the installation, to check it was running correctly.

One quick suggestion, which may or may not help - try resetting the ONT.

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

I'm checking speed using wirelessly

I don't have a spare ethernet cable.

@mpsoborne if @jab1 s suggestion dosent give any results

you need to make sure that the device is connecting to the 5ghz band. A 50Mb speed looks remarkably like its connected to the 2.4ghz band in which case 50Mb is about what you'll get!

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

I don't know if the engineer did a speedtest, he didn't mention it.

How do I reset the ONT, sorry not very technically minded.

I realise using a cable would give a more accurate speed but I am using the same laptop in the same position, the router is in the same position as before so surely it should reach faster speeds than it currently.

To reset the ONT , press a paper clip or similar into the reset hole on the R/H side until the lights flash, release and wait until all three go green.

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

Looks like it is using 2.4ghz band, how do I change it to 5ghz ? will this affect anything else? Thank you.

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

@mpsoborne  assuming the laptop is running Windows , https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-force-wifi-to-connect-over-5ghz-in-windows-11-10

It wont affect anything else

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

@mpsoborne after the ONT reset, check that the link from the router to the ONT is showing 1Gb.

To confirm the Hub and ONT connection is 1Gbps look here :- http://192.168.1.254/basic_-_status.htm  WAN link speed.

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

I did ONT reset, lights didn't flash they all went out except for power light, waited, nothing happened so switched off at socket and restarted, lights on green again, checked router status WAN link speed shows 100mbps.

Re: Full Fibre 500 upgrade speed only averaging 50mbps

Fix

@mpsoborne

"WAN link speed shows 100mbps."

Replace the ethernet cable between the router and the ONT.
