New FTTP installation location

Getting FTTP installed. Previous owner has it set up so that the landline socket is above the front door (and another socket is to the side of the door)

I don’t think either of these work for fibre so a new socket needs installing - is this likely to be a problem for the engineer, particularly if a fibre cable needs running to the house? Images below should clarify regarding location

An FTTP install always involves running a new fibre cable to the house. An ONT (Optical network termination) box is also installed. Its about the same size as the master socket BUT does require to be within 1m of a mains power socket. The router is then connected to the ONT by an ethernet cable.

Is your cable feed underground or overhead ?

Underground cable feed. I'd be happy for the ONT to be installed above the door where the old socket is now

@4rmst

The router is connected via ethernet cable so can go anywhere you're happy to run said cable.

An external Comsumer Splice Point (CSP) is required, probably on the wall beside the door or where the copper cable comes up from underground. The ONT could be situated in the front room if you're happy with that.

Do you know where the current copper cable runs to get to the box above the door?

Re: New FTTP installation location

@4rmst strange that you appear to have two Openreach master sockets,  one to the right of the door, a 5c with no faceplate and the one above the door , a 5c with a Mk4 dual faceplate.

Does the incoming cable feed the one to the right of the door ?

From what I can see it shouldnt be a problem to locate the ONT in either of those places. The incoming fibre is terminated in a CSP (customer splice point) which is a grey plastic box located at ground level on an outside wall. The fibre then goes through the wall to the ONT located inside (usually) opposite the CSP.

Where do you propose to located the router ?

Re: New FTTP installation location

I don't know where the current copper cable runs to but I'd imagine its one of those two sockets and the other is now redundant. If possible I'd like to have the router on that 'shelf' above the front door but that will only be possible if the ONT goes up there as well I think

Re: New FTTP installation location

@4rmst As you have a double power socket above that shelf, I see no reason why the ONT cannot be located where the 5C/mk.4 socket is now, providing there is a straight-through run. As the socket is there, I guess there must be?

Re: New FTTP installation location

@4rmst

I was trying to figure out where the copper cable comes from to get to the MS. You should be able to see where it emerges from the ground and from that figure out a route to the Master Socket.

The ONT can only go above the door if there's an easy way to get to the other (external) side of the door. I can't see from the picture but how is the porch finished - is the roof open or has it been sealed off?

Out of interest what does the narrative below the results window say about the install in the following

Actually looking at the pictures again can I see the cable on the outside just to the left of the door? It appears it may come through the porch about a third of the way up.

Re: New FTTP installation location

It is clear the front door and  porch has had some work carried out.

Front door view

I see a electric/gas metre locker, letter box, porch light and maybe a key safe on the left wall.

Screenshot 2025-04-06 074108.jpg

On the right there is a door for maybe a storage room.

I would check in here to see if the incoming phone cable comes through and the direction it's going

Looking inside.

To the left of the front door I suspect there is a downstairs toilet which will be the reason behind the phone line coming to the right of the front door.

To me enlarging the picture I am wondering if there is some cable trunking running along the floor below the door

Screenshot 2025-04-06 075504.jpg

The trunking would be something like https://www.screwfix.com/p/d-line-pvc-white-micro-trunking-16mm-x-8mm-x-2m/86007

Without taking the faceplate off both Openreach master socket it will be impossible to say which is the master, they are both marked up as Master Socket, but I suspect it will be the floor level one.

Alternatively there is a void above the porch has had a ceiling fitted, the cable could run across here
