Upgrading delay?

Re: Upgrading delay?

I'm running pfSense router firmware on my own hardware, on a non-Plusnet SoGEA connection.

"[wan_link0]" looks like a separated sequence of PPP interactions dealing with LCP and CHAP negotiation, which when complete the "link0" joins the "wan" bundle, and from then on the log entries refer to "[wan]" as PPP carries on associating WAN addresses for IPv6, IPv4, and a /30 block, etc.

@Anonymous

OK - it appears it doesn't show up in the Hub2 stats.

@bmc

That's a pity, because if BBEU was shown in the Hub2 PPP log, then that would have been an easy way for other customers to get their BBEU without attempting to extract it from Plusnet customer support who seem clueless when asked for it.

That's because PN, and most of the mass-market ISP's use call centres, sometimes with useless first-line staff. I  call mine and get directed to an agent fully trained in the subject, who can then transfer me to someone else if I ask a question they are unsure of the answer to. Did that this morning, and spoke to four different people.

Re: Upgrading delay?

I don't understand how you are seeing it.

The router constructs the pppoe request including your username & password but it doesn't know your bbeu. The pppoe relay-agent in the DSLAM inserts the bbeu & circuit I'd  into the pppoe request using the vendor specific field.. when the reply comes back from the authentication the relay- agent strips out the vendor specific field so the router shouldn't be seeing it ?

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Upgrading delay?

Yep, upgraded to FTTP for less than I am currently paying for 40/10 FTTC and I keep my phone connection for free. A very useful half an hour.

Re: Upgrading delay?

@jab1  well done !

What speed FTTP did you go for ?

Re: Upgrading delay?

Only the 100/30, which is more than enough for what I want, but with the  option to upgrade within the contract - if I want, which I won't.

Re: Upgrading delay?

I would have done the same, as like you I don't need faster than SoGEA speeds, but the increased reliability of FTTP and the lower monthly cost will very much be appreciated when Openreach finally reach me here in the isolated countryside !

Re: Upgrading delay?

No altnets, then @Anonymous ? I have a feeling OR only did us as Connect have laid their cables, and initially promised us connection by 'mid-Feb', but they have gone quiet, and Virgin/02 are also working in the area, as I discovered while I was out this afternoon.

We weren't scheduled to be done until 2026, and are still not a 'Fibre Priority' exchange.

Re: Upgrading delay?

It doesn't.

Stuff that turns up in the Hub2's logfiles is a bit of a moveable feast.

Re: Upgrading delay?

Personally I'd be wary of upgrading within a contract. The small print may prevent you from downgrading should prices increase.

Re: Upgrading delay?

@greygit1 (1) I'm not intending to upgrade - within the contract or at renewal - I don't need the extra speed. (2) My ISPs contracts are very clear, and I always read such things very carefully, so no risk there.

Annoyingly there is an altnet FTTP pod and rolls of fibre, attached/hanging from the BT pole standing on my land !

Unfortunately that altnet is way too expensive, have the worst customer support, their network in my area often drops out for hours or days (if it's a weekend), I can't get ANY believable answers to technical questions that I ask (they make stuff up that they think I want to hear !), and they don't have any other ISPs using their network. So... NO THANKS !

On a brighter note, I've recently checked the Openreach Ultrafast roll-out map, and the BT FTTP installation roll-out in ALL the surrounding exchange areas seem to have recently been bought forward by about two years - and are now 'building' or 'building-soon' status, leaving only my exchange area marked as not being in the build plans.  I can't imagine that Openreach wouldn't fill in the area where I am (once the surrounding areas are done), as the distances involved are so small that it wouldn't make sense to leave an isolated patch unfinished on their map - I can literally see all four surrounding exchange areas from my garden - so close but yet so far !
