Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

There is something wrong there - if you have gone for the max speed, that looks a tad low. I might be barking up the wrong tree here - sure someone will correct me if I am, but how old is the machine you are using?

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

not directly into router but via TPL link.

What do mean by TPL Link ? is that a Homeplug (powerline) connection ?

As @jab1 says, there's something wrong there. The upstream is fine but the downstream is not. It should be around 900Mb.

As I said above, try the speedtest cli version

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

Yes, but that wasnt directly wired to the router!. It was via a 'TPL Link' which I suspect is a Homeplug ? in which case I'm not suprised at the low speed. A 1000AV Homeplug will max out at around 150Mb in my experience

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

Thanks for all the comments and questions.

Apologies if I am not explaining myself clearly. There is no spell checker here either.

Background: ASDL/Copper broadband service with sky and then plusnet (75mbs) for 20 years with no issues at all. Running multiple devices over wifi and two TPL link power over ethernet adapters. All was well with the world.

Thursday - I switch to full fibre - a 900 package. Since then broadband and wifi have worked intermittently and speed has fluctuated hugely- devices have struggled to connect on Wifi and my router speeds. I have had to repeatedly reset my router but it will not work for long.

Since or during installation I made no changes to my devices aside from plugging in a cat 7 cable to the router as the one provided by plusnet was too short. It is the same router (Plusnet 2 Hub) as before but now plugged into the WAN using an ethernet cable as advised and set up by the Openreach engineer who attended on site.

I have just tested my connection as I type this now and can only get 8 mbs on my PC with a power over ethernet connection to my router (TP Link 2000av). But My phone says it can get 475 mbs over wifi! This is random!

Even though I am not technically minded, it is clear that something is not working as it should be. Many of the comments here are implying that it is something that I have done wrong or the problem is my end = I appreciate the help and support and I am following up everything you have said. I would expect to have to adjust or update my devices to ensure they were working as expected. However, I am still struggling to see what I have physically done to change or alter any or all of my devices that were using the internet without issue prior to this installation.

I have read about 'settling in' periods but this has been 4 days. I would also assume that as a customer I should have to do little in the way of management over an installation like this to enable it to work as expected. By expected, my expectations are a stable, consistent and secure connection where I don't have to factory reset my router every hour, check my speed every 10 minutes or so and worry if I am going to be able to access my email, work or the TV - let alone stream a film.

This can't be the fiber dream I was hoping for at 900 mbs when I can barely get 10....?

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

I have just tested my connection as I type this now and can only get 8 mbs on my PC with a power over ethernet connection to my router (TP Link 2000av). But My phone says it can get 475 mbs over wifi! This is random!

Powerline adaptors are the 'spawn of the devil', any resemblence of the actual speed to the quoted one is purely coincidental!

I have a pair I use occasionally and on the same electrical circuit they will max out at around 150Mb, on different circuits (especially via RCDs) then 20Mb is fairly normal!. If yours are generally achieving around say 100Mb then you would not have noticed on your old connection since that was faster than the internet connection.

As to the 475Mb wifi, well that's about right. The Plusnet Hub 2 is only a Wifi 5 router, I'm sat about 4m from my router (also only Wifi 5) and my fairly recent laptop maxes out at around 450Mb. In terms of wifi being erratic, I suspect that the reset of the router has possibly caused it to use different wireless channels that are subject to interference with neighbouring networks. Use of a wifi analyser app (such as https://www.wifianalyzer.info/ ) on a smart phone should enable that to be investigated and if necessary the channels can be changed manually on the router.

So, to establish whether there is a basic problem with your Fibre 900 connection requires a test using a wired connection DIRECT to the router. If that is significantly less than 900Mb then there's potentially a problem and Plusnet should be able to get Openreach to investigate.

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

@malvus2 Hi!

With your mobile getting 475 over Wi-Fi but your PC getting only 8 would suggest that there is something with the setup between the router and the PC that is causing the 8 mb.

Is there any realistic way you could either connect the router directly to the PC using an ethernet, no power line adapters, extenders etc... and run a speed test again or at least replace the equipment you are using for the connection between the router and the devices?

Even try a different port on the back of the router for the ethernet cable, could be anything really.

475 over Wi-Fi sounds alright depending on your location and the phones max for Wi-Fi Speeds, I reckon that this is just a setup issue with the PC.

All tests for the line coming back squeaky clean.

Let us know!

And as I'm finishing writing this I see @MisterW has basically said the exact same thing I have. So, uh, What he said!

Thanks, Lex

Re: Wifi 'connected without internet'

@MisterW @LexLex2020

The wifi scanner was interesting - I never knew this was a thing. All readings were green 'excellent' - and the router is set to 'smart' to find the best channels available. I noticed it switched when I told it to but it seems to prefer two channels which came up as green on the scanner.

My Wifi currently via smartphone is currently excellent at over 300+ on the 3 phones I checked. Happy with that  - if it lasts!

In contrast, the wired connections are not good at the moment - attached below are two laptop tests which plugged directly into the router by wire. See below. 30 or 40...?? Note that 4 hours ago (my earlier post!) I was getting 356mbs....!

On my powered line I am getting barely 20 at the moment. I would expect them to be 100 plus at least - 150 ideally! I understand what you are saying about me potentially 'not noticing' previously but I have been gaming and streaming for years and never had any issues as I was getting 50+ speeds on my old connection - I notice anything that makes my game stuff laggy, spikey and unplayable! Yesterday my wifi wasn't working and now my wired is so slow - this is so frustrating.

I have just ordered a 20m cable to connect my main PC directly to test this further.

Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I suggest that when that arrives you disconnect all the powerlines and test with just a single direct wired connection
