Landline Caller ID from international number showing as "unrecognised"

This is related to Caller-ID for international numbers.
Relatives of mine live in a block of flats, and they have Plusnet Broadband and Landline and use a fairly basic BT wireless handset.
The flats recently had a new building intercom installed. The intercom works by calling each flat's registered phone number (whether landline or mobile) when the "doorbell" for that flat is pressed.
We were expecting the incoming intercom call to show a French number (and indeed this is the case in other flats) however it only shows as "unrecognised" on their handset.
Not a bit deal, though it would be nice to be able to assign a unique ringtone for "doorbell" calls but the handset would need to recognise the number to do this.
We've confirmed that Caller-ID works correctly for calls from UK numbers (mobile and landline).
Could the "unrecognised" be due to this being an overseas call? Does Plusnet Caller-ID work with international numbers?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
