Now you mention it running an ethernet cable down from the loft to a convenient location would work - if it can be done.
Given the sow speed of the connection I'd be loath to recommend a wireless link for the phone.

Using an Ethernet cable will not make a jot of difference to the service connection speed. I read that VoIP only needs about 100kbps both up and down.

Thanks all,
My Plusnet contract runs out next April so I have sometime to try and persuade the better half to start using her mobile and we give up the landline.
Unlikely to be succesful and I will review again after a friend who lives in Bristol goes to a meeting there. I suspect he will give up the landline! He is an electrican so will go with the simpest solution.
Thanks and a thumbs up to all who contributed. I am away for the weekend but will review all this In September.
Cheers to all,
Wuz

@Wuz Your router will have to be repositioned,
Why?
I know that some ISPs provide a hub with a built in ATA but their use is not mandatory. Third party ATAs are stand alone and can be connected using a WiFi bridge such as a simple extender with an Ethernet output. Some ISPs, such a BT/EE will also give a free issue remote wireless ATA on request. These look like a power brick fitted with a phone socket. They are connected wirelessly to the hub via WPS but interestingly continue working with the hub wireless switched off.
Fair enough, @Baldrick1 As I have a ATA in my Fritz!Box, I admit to not having looked deeply into options - I'm always open to education, though.
