IPv6 is the new net address system that replaces the current protocol IPv4, which is about to run out of spaces to allocate.
Web companies participating in the event have pledged to enable IPv6 on their main websites from that date.
The Internet Society, which made the announcement, said the day represented "a major milestone" in the deployment of the standard

Just been speaking to Dave and once we have some firm ideas about what we're doing he will post here about it.

Don't keep us waiting too long... and please let the answers be Yes to all the good questions above...
Priorities for me: web hosting, static address block, then everything else.
Ah, interesting times to be a network person.

Things are moving on with IPv6, we're just testing out some of the View My Broadband Usage functionality now (I'll put a new post out about that) and you'll have seen the posts about testing out IPv6 firmware on the Technicolor routers.
There are plans in place for IPv6 on the various websites, email, hosted services etc. as well as things like DNS but at the moment I can't give you any dates as to when any of them will be done yet, we'll keep you updated as each thing happens like I'll now go and post about VMBU.

It works fine on ipv4.
I wouldn't want to expose most devices to the internet, directly.

That's what a firewall is for.

Quote However, due to the shortage of IP addresses, many devices - such as multiple computers in the one home - have to share addresses, which can often slow down connection speeds.

Although why they think sharing addresses slows down connection speeds is another matter entirely - sure there is an overhead but it is negligible. I suspect the author is confusing the sharing of addresses with the sharing of a connection's bandwidth.

It's not even half true - each device has a different address.

While every device within your network has its own internal address, they all appear to the outside would as the same machine (the NAT router).
