Re: Another re-contracting from FTTP Trial query

Yeah I can confirm all settings have updated when the product change completed and the router rebooted at ~9pm last night, so doesn't seem to be anything our side that's restricting the speed.

Checking QoS would be what I'd do first too.

Re: Another re-contracting from FTTP Trial query

@RobPN looking back on some of your earlier posts you mention a 2920. Are you still using that ?

Not connected to WAN1 are you ? ISTR WAN1 is only 100Mb .

WAN2 is Gigabit but the quoted throughput is still only around 150Mb.

I had a similar problem some while ago with a 2830 , even though its WAN was Gb it still maxed out around 100Mb NAT throughput

What does your account show as current line speed ?

@MisterW - that's something which was puzzling me as my Current Line Speed is showing correctly as 160 Mb/s

What model draytek router ? and have you tried it with the QoS disabled ?

It's a long in the tooth 2920Vn with the WAN2 port being used configured as Gigabit but I would've thought it could handle a fairly lowly 160 Mb/s, but perhaps not.

QoS per se is disabled, but the setting I was referring to is as shown below under Bandwidth Management which I did have enabled and set to 160 Mb/s (previously 79 Mb/s), I've now disabled it as shown which may have made a slight difference as subsequent speed tests were slightly higher.

BandwidthLimit.PNG

However, I'm embarrassed Embarrassed to say that connecting my PC direct to the ONT, speedtest.net shows that my download speed is just under 150 Mb/s whilst the AAISP tester shows 155 Mb/s Smiley

During testing it crossed my mind to investigate my LAN cables etc. although I don't think they're the problem as I don't have any LAN speed problems that I'm aware of, but worth double checking I guess.  The cable used to connect the PC to the ONT is the one which normally connects the router to the ONT so no problem with that one.

Perhaps I'll have to reluctantly use try the PN Hub2 sent to me a while back which still lives in its sealed box.

Thanks for your interest @MisterW and apologies for diving in before testing without the router! Embarrassed

Before the 2920Vn I had a 2820Vn which IIRC has a 100 Mb WAN2 port, which is what prompted me to get the 2920Vn.

The VoIP is handy on those but doesn't seem to be as widely available on DrayTek routers as it once was, although as I now mainly use my Gigaset N300IP the accounts in the DrayTek (up to 12 accounts as you probably know) don't get used as often as they used to.  Perhaps time to bite the bullet and look on eBay for a more up to date DrayTek, probably having to forego the VoIP facility.  If neccessary I could always continue using the 2920Vn with SIP accounts registering via LAN instead of WAN.

@RobPN No problem. At least you were clued up enough to do the direct test. I can understand why you would want to continue with the 2920 , partcularly if you need VPN support. I know when I went to 900Mb FTTP I was reluctant to give up my 2830 for the Hub 2.

In the end I went for one of these https://www.broadbandbuyer.com/products/42647-tp-link-er605/ and use a secondary router configured as a Wireless Access point. This can handle the 900Mb throughput wired and I can get around 500Mb using 5ghz wireless on my lappie. The ER605 is quite small (similar size to an 8 port switch) and only takes around 9W of power, so having a 2nd router isnt a massive issue. You can either manage with the Omada software or standalone using its built in GUI (which is how I manage it)

If neccessary I could always continue using the 2920Vn with SIP accounts registering via LAN instead of WAN.

If youve got an N300IP do you really need anything else for voip ? The N300 is what I use for voip (well apart from the Polycom 321 that connects to the office PBX)

No problem, glad there's not a fault per se and good luck with your search for a new router!

Re: Another re-contracting from FTTP Trial query

Hi @Gandalf ,

Thank you for sorting this this. The change has happened sometime this morning. I've changed from 300/30 (or 330/33?) on the trial to 500/75 for £31.99 pcm.

Having been on the trial since 2010, and having tested routers for Dave Tomlinson, it is the end of era!

Re: Another re-contracting from FTTP Trial query

Hi @FttpPeter, it is an end of an era indeed. 13 years on a trial is a good run though!

If you had ~300mbps previously, I have a feeling the provision may have been 330/50. I made a list a while ago here showing a handful of the supplier speed provisions against the full fibre packages we offer.

Although it's entirely possible it could have been a different provision, due to how long ago it was setup.

Fairly certain it will have been 300/30, which was flavour of the day back then.

A quick update, I've now replaced my DrayTek 2920Vn with a DrayTek 2927 (just the base model with no VoIP or WiFi etc.), but thanks for the tip @MisterW , that looks a tidy router for a good price.  And yes, VPN support is very handy, although I've only set up a couple so far.  As you'll be aware, previously the 2920 was no longer supported/capable of being updated with regard to some things such as X-Auth and IKEv2 which prevented connections from Dial-in User accounts from phones with newer mobile OS versions.

After trying without success for a few 2927s on eBay (on which the prices were quite a high percentage of the new price) I gave up, bit the bullet and bought a brand new one from Ballicom.  Typically there's one on eBay now for £120 which I'd have paid even though the seller looks to be profiteering on £15 postage!

I wasn't looking forward to transferring the settings from the 2920 to the 2927, in particular the several tens of 'Bind IP to MAC' ones, but I noticed the 2927 had the facility to import those settings from a backup file although the 2920 isn't able to make the required file!  To avoid errors creeping in I didn't want to copy them over manually, but I managed to extract the required info in text form by inspecting/copying the GUI browser page source contents and pasting/editing it in notepad to compile the plain-text file after checking the required format from a saved backup using a couple of manual entries.

Admittedly I use the N300IP for most of my VoIP calls, but I still occasionally use the 2920Vn mainly because it's very simple to make and receive SIP URI calls with it.  That can be done with the Gigaset but IME it's nowhere near as straightforward, and also AFAIK requires certain handsets.  I did once buy a Gigaset handset which I knew was capable of doing that, but I wasn't impressed with the ease of use as compared to the DrayTek implementation.

EDIT:  missed a word

@RobPN  nice router! I do like the Draytek kit, if only they weren't so expensive. Can't really justify spending that sort of money on a router.

Re: Another re-contracting from FTTP Trial query

You're not wrong about expensive @MisterW !

I wish that £120 one on eBay had come up a bit sooner as that would have been closer to my s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d target price, but I wanted to get buying a replacement out of the way instead of spending time searching.

OT, I'm now going to start searching for a used fanless NUC or similar to replace a semi-failed networked audio receiver, but on which some of the non-networked functions and amplifier still work..
