BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

Hello,

Last week we switched from our rather tired Plusnet Hub One to a refurbished BT Smart Hub 6.

While the wifi signal and connection has been much better, over the last few days we've experienced the hub completely disconnecting from the internet bang on 00:02am with its blue light going to either orange or green. Nothing but a reboot of the hub will fix this.

I noticed via the hub manager that the latest firmware was installed on the 22nd. It was fine on the Sunday night and Monday night, but the issues seem  to have coincided with the automatic firmware install from BT.

I have tried a couple of factory resets but this hasn't solved anything.

There were no issues with Plusnet hub disconnecting, it seems to be since we switched to the Smart Hub.

Any help or advice would be extremely appreciated on this matter.

Many thanks.

@MGS1

Smarthubs connect to BT servers every 24 hours. I have never watched the lights when this happens. If you leave it does it automatcally reconnect after a couple of minutes?

What does the event log report when the connection drops!

Thanks for your reply.

The first time it disconnected, I thought it was just a wifi drop out, so I left it five minutes before having to go downstairs to the hub to reset it manually.

The log files show the following around the time it disconnects:

Thanks for the reply.

The first time it disconnected I thought it was a wifi drop out, so I waited five minutes before having to go downstairs to manually restart it.

I tried to post the log results twice but it's being marked as spam and deleted for some reason.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

I think I've solved the issue.

I did some more reading up on the internet about this and it seems the IPv4 config in the hub manager has a DHCP Server lease time. When I checked, this was set to "1 day" with a max of 21 days as an option. I've now changed it to 21 days and I'll see if that fixes the issue come tomorrow at midnight when the hub has been resetting itself.

It's possible to disable the DHCP entirely but that would complicate things for me as I'm not tech savvy enough to be able to give each device on the network a static IP address. Is this something the hub would do or would I need to do that manually? 21 days for a reboot instead of 1 day is much more bearable anyway.

Thanks again for help @Baldrick1

@MGS1

That's strange. You definitely shouldn't have to reboot the hub because it's renewed the lease. Where did you read this?

Please let us know if it fixes it.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

@Baldrick1 The hub reset again last night at midnight, but I left it instead of manually restarting it as I usually would and within a minute it had automatically reconnected to the internet (which is odd, because the first time I left it, it wouldn't reconnect at all by itself).

Regarding the lease time, I read it here (first reply to author): https://community.bt.com/t5/Archive-Staging/Been-advised-to-change-lease-time-please-help/td-p/76893...

As I say, mine was set to 1 day so I think that is why my hub was resetting every 24 hours at midnight. I'll report back after midnight tonight to see if this has made the difference and fixed things.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

@MGS1

Looking at this link it is a totally different issue.This concerns a Zeppelin Air (whatever that is) losing it's connection to the router when in sleep mode if the lease is renewed. It's the Zeppelin that needs a reboot, not the router.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

@Baldrick1 It's a completely different issue, yes, but I believe the lease is the issue here as it's for IP addresses. It would make sense that my hub is disconnecting every day if it's refreshing IP addresses for certain devices. Changing it from 1 day to 21 days should fix it. As I say I'll see what happens over the next day or two and report back.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

@MGS1

We shall see. To be honest I still suspect that it's connected to the daily TR069 interaction between the Hub and BT's server.

@Baldrick1 If that does turn out to be the case, how would I go about fixing it?

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

@MGS1

Intersting question. You've tried a factory reset and starting it up again from scratch?

All I can think of is to and try to change the time that the TR069 event occurs by leaving it switched off for several hous.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

EXACTLY the same problem for me after a switch to a BT HUB 6 on PlusNet. Same time of day. Have changed the lease time to see if that helps.

Re: BT Smart Hub 6 rebooting everyday at 12am

 @TG1000 @MGS1

did you manage to solve it? I have the same issue with the exact same log and the router (HH6A) resets itself like clockwork every night on 00:02 and takes 2-5 mins to connect back after a full reboot cycle. Haven't managed to solve it yet.

No, that didn't solve it. Stuck now. Wondering about getting the BT HUB 5 down out of the loft and reconnecting that!
