Re: Full fibre concern regarding router

@bmc

There were two different versions of the original Smarthub. One for FTTC and the other, much rarer, for FTTP. The FTTP versions also work on FTTC as, like the Hub 2, they substitute one LAN socket for the WAN.

I need to be able to have separate SSIDs for the 2.4 & 5GHz bands and assumed the PN Hub 2 doesn't allow that?

That’s true,

@bmc

Is your phone line an overhead feed or underground?

Overhead feed.

Does the BT unit you currently use support FTTC (or PPPoE) and does it have a WAN ethernet port?

The back of the router says BTHub6 and it has a broadband connection to the phone line and 4 'Gig Ethernet' ports.

@padmamati

The bottom line:

The Community Partnership Scheme needs a specified number of pledges to be confirmed, not just registered with Openreach, to secure additional funding from the Government. Note that the required number of pledges must be confirmed, there's no guarantee all will be. It's a two part procerss. Help to bring Full Fibre to your community whilst there's still the funding on offer.

With regard to your router, you have two choices, learn to live with a Plusnet Hub 2 with no option of splitting the 2.4 and 5GHz bands or buy your own. You will find the WiFi performance otherwise the same as the original Smarthub. If you must have a separate 2.4GHz band then the easiest/cheapest way is to locate a single 2.4GHz band WiFi extender with a different SSID in the same location as your router.

@padmamati

With an O/H feed I think it's slightly easier to change the location of the incoming cable though it would need a new hole drilled in the wall.

If I remember correctly the key with the BT Hub is the model number - one is FTTC and one is FTTP.
