Line speed in router stats

ADSL and FTTC routers used to show the sync speed of your connection. My old Sky router had a firmware update to include the connection speed. I know FTTP is "as fast as possible" all the time, but a visual indication wouldn't go amiss in the router interface, if for nothing more than to remind you what speeds you're signed up to 😉

Re: Line speed in router stats

I don't think it would be possible with FTTP.  On ADSL and VSDL (FTTC) the hub negotiates a sync speed which is what is being displayed for those.  With FTTP the hub just has a ethernet connection to the ONT which is why it shows as 1Gbps (or could be 2.5Gbps with a different hub and ONT).  The speed is then profiled on the Openreach side to that which you are paying for.

Re: Line speed in router stats

I realise it could be a pretty pointless exercise, as fibre allegedly once connected gives the best speed at all times. However, the Sky router does actually now show the connection speed after a firmware update (noy my image):

I know i'm not on Sky any more and I know this is not a Sky router, but if it's good for one make, it must be possible for all.

Re: Line speed in router stats

@Marksfish

The Broadband Link connection speeds are sourced from the DSL connection of the modem NOT the router.

Although the Hub Two provides the connection speed between it and the ONT it is at a hardware layer.

If you are interested in your speeds then consider setting up an automated speedtest https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli further help is available with a search.

@Dan_the_Van I would normally agree with that BUT in the picture shown by @Marksfish the downstream is showing as 550Mb therefore can't be DSL!.

I'm not sure where SKy might be getting those (apparantly) FTTP speeds from, unless they are just showing the product speeds

@MisterW

I must admit I didn't really look at the numbers correctly. Apologies Embarrassed

Yes, I wonder what the source of the connection speeds could be.

Re: Line speed in router stats

@MisterW  I had a quick look at the Sky forum and there was a router update to display something for FTTP connections as @Marksfish mentioned.

As there is no equivalent of sync speed on FTTP connections there were questions on the forum about what these displayed speeds actually are.

Unsurprisingly couldn't find any definitive answer but the general feeling was that SKY are just send the contracted profile speed data to the router.

So numbers which will never change and of no practical use, as stated in the opening post ...." if for nothing more than to remind you what speeds you're signed up to :winking_face:

Which makes me think of a young grandchild of mine who whenever told anything immediately replies "I know that already"🙄

@RealAleMadrid that would be my thought, probably via TR069. I cant see anywhere in the communication between the router, ONT & OLT where any line parameters are visible.
