Lose of Wi-Fi signal in the evenings.

My apologies if this subject has been raised before, but this is beginning to get to me.

We live in an old house, not big but built in there early 1700’s from local limestone boulders. The walls are in places two feet thick which means that Wi-Fi is pretty much confined to the room where the router is situated.

We have 3 t.v’s all of which have a fire stick installed. The one in the sitting room gets it’s Wi-Fi directly from the router and that fire stick and internet access is fine.

From the router we then feed via a T.P link device the internet connection. From the second Wi-Fi TP transmitter we get the signal for the kitchen TV and fire stick and the TV and fire stick in the bedroom above.

During the day we have no  problem, Wi-Fi is great, we get 25-28 Mbs when doing a download test on the fire sticks.

However in the evenings the two TP link fed devices start to loose their internet connections, but not the Wi-Fi signal.

It gets worse as the evening goes on and for longer periods till by around 9 o clock it’s gone completely. Same on tablets, laptops phones etc. Wi-Fi but no internet.

The Wi-Fi from the router is fine while this is going on.
I have bought new TP units but still the same problem, I have tried switching the cable in the back of the router using all 3 of the ports and several different cables.

Could it be the router that’s starting to fail ?

Any questions please ask, I have tried everything I can think of but getting nowhere.

Thank you.

@Andybell

What exactly do you mean ? is it a powerline (homeplug) extender ?

The one in the sitting room gets it’s Wi-Fi directly from the router and that fire stick and internet access is fine.

Could it be the router that’s starting to fail ?

Why would you suspect the router ? if it was the router it would affect all devices

Yes I mean the power line extender.

and I am asking the question of others if it could be the router. I have no idea but it’s only thing I have not changed .

@Andybell

Is there any possibility of running ethernet cable - either internal or external?

Potentially not the cheapest solution but it would provide a solid starting point elsewhere and is future proof.

Power line extenders are subject to mains borne interference, so there may be some electrical appliance that is making electrical noise that is messing up the signal. Typically it will be an electric motor - such as a central heating pump, or a fridge/freezer - or a fluorescent light.

You could try switching things off to isolate the source - if you can identify it then you may be able to do something about it. However, interference can come in from outside with the mains supply - so it could potentially originate from another property that is on the same mains phase as your home.

Ethernet cable, as has been suggested, is the most reliable solution - but may not be the easiest.

@Andybell  possibly other electrical stuff on in the evenings causing interference with the powerlines. As @bmc  says, is there any possibility of a cable ?

Thank you Brian,

Yes hard wiring would be possible if there was no other option.

Frustrating thing is that it’s all been fine and working normally for the last 4 years when we moved here .

@Andybell

In which case I'd highly recommend going down this route now.

As stated, while perhaps not the cheapest / easiest way of doing things it gives a solid starting point at the end of the ethernet cable(s). It's future proof and you can add components if desired (using ethernet switches) without any loss of quality.

Re: Lose of Wi-Fi signal in the evenings.

Thank you Corringham and Mr W.
I had thought of interference from an outside source. The nearest neighbours are both far enough away for that to be unlikely , and it happens when they are not home, however I admit it could be a device inside our house that’s developed a fault and I never even thought of another property on the same phase .

i think maybe a way to test this is to get a length of Ethernet cable and as a temporary test simply run it through the house into the kitchen and see if that cures the problem. If it does then make a permanent installation.

Re: Lose of Wi-Fi signal in the evenings.

May be worth d/loading a WIFI Analyser app, to check which channels are least used in your vicinity;

then manually change your WIFI channel on router to least used.
