Re: Use own router. Bridge mode

@john88 you need to set the Internet(WAN) connection to PPPoE with your Plusnet credentials. Details are here https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/ you need to use the 'what settings do I need for a Fibre router connected to a BT Openreach modem'

If you are on a Full fibre product, then just connect your router WAN port directly to the ONT.

If you are on the Fibre (SoGEA) product , then set the Hub 2 ( I assume that's the Plusnet router you have?) to Bridge mode, connect its DSL port to the Openreach master socket and connect a LAN (not the red WAN!) port to the WAN port of your router.

Hope that helps

Re: Use own router. Bridge mode

Hi MisterW

Asus RTAXE 8700

Followed your easy instructions on how to use my own router, sort of. Made the mistake of leaving out the plusdsi.net when entering my login name. I noticed afterwards that I had no wireless connections, the ethernet side was still working. Managed to get wireless back this morning by resetting the Plusnet router. Is this a normal occurance. At the moment Im just using the Plusnet router.

Would still like to use my Asus router, any further instructions

Regards

John.

When you switch the Plusnet router to bridge mode it will automatically disable its wireless. You should be using the wireless on the RTAXE 8700. Any devices that were connecting to the Plusnet wireless network will need to be changed to connect to the RTAXE 8700 wireless

@john88

To make this discussion easier by not having to explain every possibility, could you clarify what broadband service you have ?

  • "Full Fibre" with an Openreach ONT box on the wall with an incoming optical fibre ?
  • Plusnet "Fibre (SoGEA)" connected to an Openreach telephone Master Socket using landline copper wires?.

@MisterW

It should be very clear what happens when 'bridge mode' is selected

Although you can still see the Hubs menus, there should be internet connect from a connect PC

A Hub two in bridge more 'Home >Status' page should look like

Re: Use own router. Bridge mode

Its full fibre with incoming optical fibre, Openreach ONT box. I was with Virgin before, I just switched off the router side of their router/modem. Im under the impression I can set aside this Plusnet router, and then take a ethernet cable from the ONS to the rear of my Asus router, go into the Asus router software and enter the the instructions given by MisterW. As I said in my previouse message I didnt enter my full log name, dont know if this caused me to loose WI/FI connections. All help appreciated.

Thanks

John.

Re: Use own router. Bridge mode

@john88 thanks for the clarification.

As I said in my previouse message I didnt enter my full log name, dont know if this caused me to loose WI/FI connections.

That wouldn't affect wireless per-say BUT it would mean that you didn't get an internet connection at all.

Once you'd corrected that, you should have got a connection and both wifi and ethernet connections should be working via the Asus router.

Bridge mode is not applicable to a Full fibre connection.

So to be clear, you dont use the PLusnet router at all, you simply connect the WAN port of the Asus directly to the LAN port on the ONT. Once you have configured the Asus with the correct username/passord it should work.

Yes, you simply connect the RT-AXE-7800 2.5G WAN port to the Ethernet socket on the Openreach ONT,

and there is no need for the Plusnet router to be in circuit.

Re: Use own router. Bridge mode

From the  RT-AXE-7800  User Guide

Ensure "WAN Connection Type" is set to "PPPoE",   and enter your Plusnet username/password in the correct format.

and  "Enable WAN aggregation" is "No"
