Re: Wi fi extenders

@PotatoSalad

If you already have an ethernet cable run simply buy an Ethernet Switch to provide ports for the laptops.

If there is power then PowerLine plugs would probably suit.

Re: Wi fi extenders

I have an ethernet connection and power in my garden office but the Wifi doesn't reach this far. I have 2 laptops and would also like my mobile to be connected to Wifi in the office, so the single ethernet cable doesn't really suffice.

@PotatoSalad if you already have an ethernet connection then all you need is a Wireless access point(AP), preferably one with multiple ethernet ports so that you can connect your laptops wired if required. Given that ( I assume ) your garden office isnt huge , you dont really need long range wireless but you do need a 5ghz capable AP to keep up with your 145Mb Fibre. The Vigor AP902 would do fine,

Do you have any old routers lying around as they can usually be configured as Wireless AP's without too much trouble, and of course they have 4 ethernet ports ( but check they are not just 10/100 ports ).

NB that assumes your ethernet cable is cat5e or better ?

Re: Wi fi extenders

Thanks so much for your reply.

I have an old Virgin router, would that do the job?

Re: Wi fi extenders

Maybe , although being Virgin it may be locked down. What model is it ?

Re: Wi fi extenders

It's their "Hub 3" model. I've come across this article which makes it seem possible, but pretty complicated

Re: Wi fi extenders

Hmmm, it does seem a bit tricky with that router, especially as you would ideally need to change its IP to 192.168.1.x to be in the same subnet as the Hub 2. Seems that changing its IP makes it inaccessible.

Maybe not a good router to try...

Maybe better to try and pick up one of the Vigor AP902's which are designed as access points.

If that fails then another good option is to get an ex JLB Zyxel 3925-B10C , they are often found on gumtree for around £20 or less e.g https://www.gumtree.com/p/modems-broadband-networking/zyxel-vmg3925-b10c-broadband-router-as-new-in-... .

They are not locked and can be completely configured quite easily as an access point, have 5 gigabit ethernet ports and dual band wifi

Re: Wi fi extenders

Brill, thanks again. I'll keep a lookout on Ebay/Gumtree/FB Marketplace for either the Vigor AP902 or the JLB Zyxel

Re: Wi fi extenders

No problem. If you end up with the Zyxel then shout up or drop me a PM and I'll take you through the configuration.
