How to improve battery life on your mobile

Joe Phone.pngBeing unable to make calls, listen to music, get directions, browse social media, or any of the other useful things smartphones allow us to do can be frustrating. The next time you need to make your mobile phone battery last longer, try these tips.

Use a black wallpaper

While giving your phone a personal stamp with a photo background is a feature many people enjoy, a plain black background will make your battery life better.

Most phone screens will only light up pixels with colour in them, so a block of black pixels means your screen will use less power.

Use a portable charger

If you often run out of phone battery at inopportune moments, a portable charger can be a brilliant way of staying topped up.

Portable chargers can be plugged into a power source and will retain energy once they are unplugged, allowing you to replenish a percentage of your phone’s power on-the-go.

Leave apps running in the background

Strangely, closing the apps you use regularly could have a negative impact on how long your phone battery lasts.

Closing and reopening apps will drain your battery quicker, as your device must reload the entire app from scratch. So, if you use certain apps often, feel free to leave them on in the background.

Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Bluetooth and wireless Internet are big power drainers. Turn them off during periods where you won’t be using either, such as when you’re sleeping or fancy a break from being connected, to help your device last longer.

How to turn off Bluetooth on an iPhone

• Swipe down to bring up the ‘Control Centre’

• Tap the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to toggle them on or off.

Turn off application background refresh

Without you telling them to, some phone applications will update and refresh in the background, using up battery life.

• Head to “Settings”

• Select “General”

• Tap “Background App Refresh”

• Tap the slider into the off position, or you can individually select which apps you want to refresh automatically in this section too.

Turn brightness down

The backlight on your phone also drains power so turning down the brightness on your mobile will have a big impact on the rate at which your battery runs out.

Turn off the vibrate function

For moments when being quiet is necessary – like while you’re watching a film or in the office – vibration alerts for messages and calls can be handy.

Having vibrate turned on will have a negative impact on your battery life, however, as the tiny motor it uses to operate requires a moderate amount of power to work.

• Select “Settings”, then within this menu, select “Sound”

• In this section, you’ll be able to toggle “Vibrate on Ring” and “Vibrate on Silent” on and off.
