Plus - The Plusnet Newsletter, Issue 27

Hello there, It’s been a good month for us here at Plusnet. Among other things, we’ve won the coveted ISPA award for ’Best Consumer Customer Service’, and kicked off our ’Fibre to the Premises’ trial with BT. Even though fibre will take a long time to get to everyone and the trial is very much in its infancy, we’re proud to be the first ISP in the UK to be on the BT trial - in the long run this could mean speeds of up to 100Mb/s for those with a fibre-equipped exchange, so it’s exciting stuff!

Enjoy reading - and remember that there’s more community news over at our Community Site.

Plusnet wins ISPA award for Best Consumer Customer Service

Well, the results are in, and we’re very pleased to say that Plusnet has won this year’s ISPA award for ‘Best Consumer Customer Service’ 2010.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone who has worked so very hard to achieve this over the last year. It’s no small feat - the ISPAs are the broadband industry’s most prestigious awards, and Customer Service is always one of the most fiercely contested categories.

We know that customer support is a huge part of broadband and have put an enormous amount of effort into getting it right. We’ve listened to feedback and taken on more staff this year to support you.  So for everyone in our contact centre and those supporting them, this is extremely well deserved recognition. But we won’t rest on our laurels, we’re determined to keep finding new ways to make our service even better for you.

First customer goes live on 100Mb/s fibre trial

We’re very pleased to announce that the first person in the UK to be activated on BT’s Fibre to the Premises trial (FTTP) is now connected - and he’s a Plusnet customer. This is the first important step on the long road to getting the UK connected to super-fast broadband, with this service supporting up to 100Mb/s.

Speeds this fast, when widely available, are a huge step forward for Britain’s broadband network. They could make streaming movies and TV on demand the norm, make uploading and downloading large files very fast, and generally allow lots of interesting new online services to develop.

Whilst this trial may still be a fair way off to completion, it’s an important milestone. We’ve been working very closely with BT to get the first person with an up to 100Mb/s service online, with 12 more customers lined up to take part in the Milton Keynes area.

This trial is different to the other fibre trial we've been running, called ’Fibre to the Cabinet’ (FTTC), which is small but is doing well and growing steadily. Where FTTC takes fibre from the exchange to your local distribution point only (the green cabinets you see by the road), the new trial takes fibre all the way to the home. This eliminates the need for a copper line for broadband, giving a service of up to 100Mb/s.

For now, this trial is on an extremely limited basis, so we cannot take calls related to this in our contact centre. However, we have started an FAQ section on our Community Site, and have a discussion forum on this topic here.

Blog for us - you could get a 6 month Spotify Premium subscription1

We’re always on the lookout for fun or useful things that you can use your connection for.  You may have seen our recent blogs on our community site, bringing you updates on things like Evernote, KidZui, Aardvark, and Geocaching, among others.  We hope you enjoyed them.

Now we’re giving you the chance to be the author of one of our blogs.  We’d like you to write about something on the internet that you can use for free (our blog topics are a good guide to the sort of thing we’re after).  Whatever you choose can have a premium option, but the most important thing is it has a free option for everyone too. We’ll then choose the blog which we think is best suited for our site, and publish it for everyone to see.

As an added incentive, the successful writer will also receive a 6 month Premium subscription to Spotify's online music service.

If you’re a keen blogger, we’ve got more information and tips for a good post on our community site. Please send your blogs to competition@plus.net.

Entries must be received by the end of Wednesday 4th August.
