iPhone Photo Guide: Moving your Media
The iPhone’s camera has gone from strength to strength in recent models. The iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X both boast impressive 12-megapixel cameras, with improved colour saturation offering sharper, clearer images than ever before – now even rivalling the Google Pixel 2 for picture quality.
Once you’ve mastered using the iPhone’s camera, you’ll have plenty of photos you want to keep, edit and share with others. Read on to find out how to move your photographs to other devices, so you can share easily and keep your memories.
Transferring to other Devices
Transferring your photos and videos to your PC lets you adjust images and save a back-up so you know your images are safe, even if your phone’s lost or stolen. The following methods work for both photos and videos.
How to Transfer photos from iPhone to PC
There are two easy ways to transfer your photos to a PC.
Transferring photos with Windows Explorer
This is simple and doesn’t need any extra apps or software. Follow these steps to get your images onto your PC:
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your PC using a USB cable
Step 2: Unlock your iPhone and allow your PC to access your iPhone’s photo library when prompted
Step 3: Open My Computer and find your iPhone in the devices section. Double click on the icon, then double click again on Internal Storage
Step 4: Open the DCIM folder which holds all your iPhone photographs and select those you want to copy to your PC. Once you’ve highlighted them all, right click and select Copy
Top Tip: If you press down shift whilst clicking on photos you can copy multiple images at once
Step 5: Paste the photos you’ve copied into the folder you want them in on your PC
This way of transferring photos can be used on any computer, not just ones where your iPhone is linked to the Apple account. This means you can share your images with all your friends and family.
Unfortunately, Windows Explorer won’t be able to see the photo albums you’ve made on your iPhone, so although it’s great for moving over a couple of photos, it’s not the best way to transfer an album you’ve already made.
Transferring Photos with anyTrans for iOS
Unlike transferring with Windows Explorer, this method will let you copy entire albums from your iPhone to your PC. To do this you’ll need to download the free app AnyTrans for iOS onto your PC. AnyTrans is a content managing software that’s really easy to use and 100% secure. Follow these steps to find out how:
Step 1: Download AnyTrans for iOS onto your PC
Step 2: Launch AnyTrans and connect your iPhone to your PC with a USB cable
Step 3: Click the Device tab in AnyTrans, then Content to PC
Step 4: Click the albums you want to transfer from your iPhone, then press Select
Step 5: Click the right arrow button on the right-hand of the screen to begin the transfer
Once the transfer is complete your albums will appear in your PC’s photo library.
How to Transfer Photos from iPhone to Mac
You can transfer photos from your iPhone to your Mac using these easy steps:
Step 1: Plug your iPhone into your Mac
Step 2: The Photos app should open automatically. If it doesn’t, open it from your desktop and select the iPhone icon. Unlock your iPhone and agree to give your Mac access when prompted, so it can see all of your photos and videos.
Step 3: To transfer all images to your Mac, click Import All New Photos
Step 4: Select individual photos and click Import to transfer smaller groups of photographs to your Mac
Your albums will appear in the Photos app, so it’s easy to find images you’ve already grouped together on your iPhone and transfer them to your Mac.
How to Transfer Photos FROM iPhone to iPhone
You may want to move photos from iPhone to iPhone, to share images and video with a group, or to move your data onto a new phone. There are two way to do this.
Transferring Photos to Friends’ iPhones

Step 3: Name the new album
Step 4: Type in the names of friends you want to share the album with
Step 5: Add the images and videos you want to share to the album
Transferring Photos to a New iPhone
When you set up a new phone, you’ll want to take your old photos with you. Before getting started with this, make sure both iPhones you’re using are on iOS 8.3 or later and are logged in to the same Apple account. Use the following method to transfer your photos and videos:
Step 1: Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos on both iPhones
Step 2: Turn on iCloud Photo Library on both phones
If both iPhones are logged into the same Apple account, the photos from your old phone should start appearing on your new phone.

Permanently Deleting Photos and Videos

You can restore items you have deleted by selecting the item you want to restore and pressing ‘Recover’ in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Photos and videos remain in ‘Recently Deleted’ for 28 days, after this time they’re permanently deleted automatically.
If you want to clear your deleted images before then, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Open the Photos app and go to Recently Deleted, press Select
Step 2: Press Delete All
Step 3: Press Delete Photos
Your images and videos will now be permanently deleted from your iPhone.
