Your hearing might be fine and it's just us. Oh, hang on, I'm picking something up ... yes ... yes ... OK. I can hear there is a war breaking out in sector 3 of the Andromeda galaxy. BRB.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

Had forgotten all about this, then someone pm'd me out of the blue with a similar issue !
So @_Adam_Walker_  what was the outcome ?
I will be very suprised if the engineer(s) said anything other than "noise? what noise?" and that was it, but it's worth a punt  Grin
The thing is there's a massive difference between a near-silent late night home-office and a noisey day time workshop somewhere !
Also for the guys who can't hear it: with the greatest respect to you all, your hearing, particually your high-frequency response drops off with age, so if your no longer a spring chicken then that could be why  Wink

Hi there,
Adam's out of the office until Wednesday I'm afraid but I'll nudge him in the direction of this thread when he gets back.

@Pagmalupitan (and possibly any tinnitus suffers)

I asked for a replacement on Monday 11 March and was told one would be sent. Today a new router turned up, and, hurrah, it does not have the high-pitched whine.

Yes but this was from a different batch as it was configured differently for some trial that user 'mefibre' is doing. How long until the batch of dodgy ones that I, Razer and Pagmalupitan have received runs out? There's no point plusnet keep sending us out duff ones.

Hi all,
We've not been able to test these routers yet, I've asked for a heads up when they have been so I'll do my best to let you know.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

Thanks - I look forward to the outcome.  I urge you to test it in a quiet room because in a noisy office/workshop you probably won't notice it until you put your ear to it. Remember most people's homes are a lot quieter than offices/workshops!
Given that some users (mefibre) have had routers from a different batch that are silent, I think there's a bad batch out there, although Pagmalupitan first complained of his in October 2012 whereas mine and Razer's come from Feb/March 2013 and also whistle. I don't want to request a replacement from the same noisy batch.
Interestingly there was a feature on the One Show last night where an independent body is awarding a Quiet Mark to the quietest home appliacnce in each category of the market. Had to laugh at it... my 582n router certainly wouldn't win this award any time soon!

Thanks,
I've replied to your PM by the way as we'd like to get your router back here for testing too.
When we know we've got yours back here too I'll do what I can to get the testing prioritised so we can move this forwards and see if there's any over-all issues that we need to react to.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

And when is someone going to arrange to pick up the three routers I have sitting in their boxes? It's been around two weeks since I updated my ticket: 65936072 and the last automated return to the 'ticket pool' was on the 12th March. That said, I can tolerate another wait if PN will send me one of these FTTC routers that do not whistle (and which I can apparently flash with the ADSL firmware), then the four routers which do whistle can be returned in one go.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

Still in reference to the same ticket as I posted above, I've had a reply on it today:
Quote
I apologise for the delay in getting back to you, it seems the investigation has been concluded now and your router wasn't needed.
I would advise for you place the faulty router (if you haven't already) into the returns bag I told you not to use and send it back to our warehouse.

So I know I, and I'm sure others who have, or have had, whistling routers, would like to know what the conclusion of this "investigation" was. It is somewhat infuriating not to be told anything and I can honestly only think that PN don't particularly want to tell anyone and would prefer to just brush it under the carpet.
Judging by the last line I've quoted, the "faulty" router in my case is only to be considered the one that had the ethernet port failure almost immediately out of the box and that the rest, therefor, are not to be considered faulty. That is, all the others that whistle too. Clearly this really isn't the case. I would ask my question again; is it possible for me to be provided with one of these FTTC routers that do not whistle and which I can flash with the ADSL firmware? I am also somewhat [Censored] off that I am being left to dispose of these other evidently faulty routers myself having had four pieces of [Censored] effectively dumped on me by PN. So much for caring about investigating properly.
Please excuse me, OP, for hijacking your thread.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

We're not convinced that all our ADSL routers will have that same issue but I can flash you an FTTC router and send that on Monday, also can you drop me a PM as per your availability during the daytime next week for courier pick up and I'll arrange that myself. It's only something we're offering for issues such as this so the CSC may not be aware of that.

Re: 2 weeks with Plusnet, great broadband, poor hardware!

Thank you kindly, Adam. It is much appreciated and I'll be very happy to get a pre-flashed FTTC router (it will save me having to figure out how to do it myself). I'll PM shortly.
