Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

Probably a silly question, but is switching to fibre likely to make any difference? As far as I can ascertain, fibre is available on my number.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

Hi,
Given that we still do not know what the issue is, it would be difficult to give a clear answer.  This does not look like a line problem - the synch speed is good for the 20CN service - however the useful data speed is poor.  That could be down to local interference which could equally impact a fibre service.  Equally it could be down to the 20CN configuration which I suspect Matthew hopes to ream out with the cease and re-provide.  If that is the source of the problem, then moving to FTTC would make a difference.
HTH - possibly not!  Wink

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

OK, thanks for that @Townman. I'm still not entirely sure how my exchange can have FTTC but not 21CN, but that's what the information says. Does that mean I would still be restricted to 8Mbps with fibre? Not that that's a deal-breaker, 8Mbps would be a wonderful thing at the moment... Wink  Anyway, fingers crossed that Matthew can come up with something.

It may well be that the fibre link from your cabinet goes back to an adjacent exchange that is 21CN enabled.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

As I understand it, FTTC does not touch the 21CN technology / DSLAMs - it goes straight onto the broadband backhaul.  See http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/fttc.htm
There are many rural exchanges which have been upgraded for FTTC but not 21CN WBC connect services.  I suspect some devious BTOR/BTw plot to force users over to fibre... which in some rural areas with long d-side circuits (over 1.5km) will not see decent fibre speeds.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

My exchange is still 20CN but with FTTC available. What happens is that the fibre is connected direct back to a large parent exchange, bypassing the local small exchange.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

Thanks guys, as you can tell I am a complete novice when it comes to telecomms.
I've just checked FTTC availability on my line (which potentially shows good speeds), but there is a note which reads: "This line does not have left in jumpers. There is an open order on your line which is due to complete by 29-Jul-2015." Is that something to do with Plusnet trying to sort out my problem?

The open order certainly does.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

The "left in jumpers" refers to the links in the phone cabinet (PCP) to and from the FTTC cabinet. What yours is saying is that the line has never had FTTC, so the jumpers have never been put in.
Mine says "This line has jumpers in place", because I have FTTC. If I stopped that due to a house move or getting VM cable, it would change to "This line has jumpers left in place". I'm not sure what happens if the next occupant of the house takes ADSLx. I think also the jumpers might be moved to a different line if someone else wanted FTTC and that connection to the FTTC cabinet was the only spare one.
As Townman has said, 20CN exchanges can have fibre by the feed to the FTTC cabinet going back to a WBC-enabled "headend" exchange. It's quite common. The phone stays connected to the existing exchange.

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

It seems that BT are updating my exchange to 21CN on 29 July. I wonder if something connected to that change has caused my problem?

Can I ask what your service is like now? Has it been sorted?

Re: Day 22 Without Useable Internet Connectivity

As it turns out, BT didn't update the exchange to 21CN, However, the problem was eventually sorted exactly 6 weeks after I first reported it. It required BT to do something called a 'Tie Pair Modification' (TPM). So I'm smiling again and bashing on with my thesis!  Smiley
