Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

@farnorth
I suspect your line attenuation is probably far more than the 63.5dB reported by your router. I think that value was (at one time at least) regarded as the maximum value at which ADSL would work, with routers designed so they couldn't store or report a larger value. Kitz's calculator doesn't supply estimates beyond 67dB, since I believe she had no (or insufficient) results beyond that to check the answers were meaningful.
As she notes at the bottom of her calculator page the initial data source is from the graph on this Internode (Australian) page.
What results do you get if you put your phone number and postcode into another of Kitz's pages? Did Plusnet supply an estimate when you signed up?

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Postcode etc give pretty much the same 512k maximum. Plusnet gave an estimate of 0.5Mb. Speed not really the issue, stability to me is more important. When the engineer set-up the broadband line in the first place he said if the house was about 100 yards farther down the the road I wouldn't get any broadband at all. Houses along the strath from us have to have the government subsidised satellite service, they pay 24.99 per month for 0.5Mb. For me it was down to Tiscali putting up the price by over 70%, and making me pay for something I know I won't get. By not giving me the choice to go back to what I had they lost a customer.

Cheesy Well that seemed to go fine. Line went down this morning about 10am, we went out about then, for a couple of hours, came back thought I'd try the settings for PN. Connected straight away, no problemo!!
Emails and everything working fine, connection reported as 896kbs, nr as 6.5dB.
Great stuff.

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Huh Having said the above, I have just used the speedtest.net checker and it reports a download speed of 0.25mb and an upload speed of 0.17mb, ping was 88ms. ?

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Better post the stats from the router - noise margin, attenuation and speeds (I have a horrible feeling what the result will be  :-X)

Ok;  speed 384kbs, attenuation 31.5dB and noise 6dB. Why the horrible feeling?

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

I was worried that they might have put you on a fixed rate service.
Can you try this speed test http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and also the BT Speedtest
Having said that the upstream speed is a bit worrying - do you hear any noise on the phone line - dial 17070 option 2

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Mybroadbandspeed checked twice
1st; 251kbs download..315kbs upload.
2nd test; 252kbs download..315kbs upload,  yes I double checked to make sure these were the right way round.
BT just states estimated speed 512kbs is available

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

As an add to the above just downloaded the new Foxit reader, came down at 27.9kbs. If I remember right that equates to just 223kbs connection speed. Was getting up to 80kbs on downloads previously, 640kbs connection speed equivalent.
No noise on phone line and router stats lite has a flat line at 6.5dB, no spikes.

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Just found the BT speedtester;
Initial page said configured throughput speed for this test is 250kbps.
Results are; download speed 236kbps
Dsl connection speed 896kbps download, 384kbps upload.
IP profile 250kbps

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

That is the problem - and may well take 2 or 3 days to fix itself if you hold sync and then I think the IP profile will rise to 750kbps

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Just been reading up on it. I've had a number of line and power disconnections today due to the weather (we have gale force winds and blizzard conditions at the moment). Hopefully once the weather calms down and the line holds for a few days things will sort out.

Re: Hello from soon to be ex Tiscali customer

Things are looking up!
Did the BT test this morning......... configured throughput speed 750 kbps, download speed 702 kbps, dsl connection 896 kbps download, 384 kbps upload, IP profile 750 kbps. Started to download a file, came down at 90kb equivalent to a 720 k connection, very pleased!!
