Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

... but be aware that if you hang on to it as a spare and for any reason you decide to leave within the first 12 months you would have to pay for it.

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

A little update, nearly a month on.  My phone service has changed over smoothly now, and seems to be working fine, even the Caller ID which I've never had before!
The ADSL continued working at a very decent speed (over 3M synced, about 2M on the speed test things), and everything appears to be as it should.
However, my first problem is a sudden drop in speed (too slow for iplayer), yesterday I think.  The speed test says only 0.45M now, although the modem sync still appears to be good, like this:
Connection Speed 3872 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 54 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 18 db
Through a slightly obscure link on your help pages (https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed) I found that my speed is indeed currently "500".
I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this has come down when the sync speed is still good and I don't *think* there have been any reconnects until just now when I've been messing with it.  Is there any way to find that sort of information out through the Member Centre?
And is there any better advice than "wait for 3 days" in terms of getting the "plusnet speed" reset (sorry, I don't know the right term for the one on that page)
The BT Speedtest thing gives this:
Quote
Download speedachieved during the test was - 396 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :0 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 3000 Kbps

Which is all a bit mystifying.
I'm going to continue with the BT speedtester instructions and see where that leads..
Thanks again!

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

The Plusnet speed should follow the BT IP Profile within 12 hours.

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

Thanks Jelv.  Do you know if there is any way to bump it?  I want to play Halo!
Unfortunately I found that the second step of the BTspeedtest (where you connect as bt_test_user@plusdsl.net) doesn't work - it connects but can't load the second page, looks like there's no DNS server or something.
Perhaps I shouldn't be moaning because even at half a meg it's more stable and faster than what I had from AOL / TalkTalk with an identical setup, but I've been spoilt by 2 megs Smiley

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

If your profile has been 3000 for 12 hours ring in and ask for your current line speed to be set to match your IP Profile. If they try to tell you that it could take up to 3 days it's spherical objects - insist that they correct it.

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

I had a really bad experience with last internet provider.  We had terrible people move into a house 2 doors down that hacked into our account and downloaded all the time.  Cry When I was made aware of this I rang the company to told really nothing they could do, then I was phone by fair useage team to go elsewhere.  I was furious, constantly asked for them to provide me times and dates of when the downloads occured - there was 52 GB in one month - I was really shocked.  Sad Since moving to Plusnet they advised me to turn the hub off when not in use - I love the fact you can check your useage for he month and so far since we have turned off the hub etc - we only download less that a GB a day proving that it was not us.  Incidently these idiots down the road use facebook and do not password their info - so you can see when they are on the system sometimes they have posted on Facebook nearly all day and are on it everyday - since we switched providers and and have turned the hub off during the day and at night - we only use it for a while in the evening - they have not been on facebook in over a week - now does that not tell you something.  Thanks Plusnet for listening to my needs and helping me overcome my problems.  Lets hope our relationship gets better and shove 02 my old provider  - who treat you like crap!  Cheesy

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

You can completely avoid that sort of problem by switching on encryption in your wireless router.

Back to my problem, the speed is still locked down at 0.5M for no apparent reason.  I suppose I'll have to raise a support ticket.

@Elvira
Welcome to the forum.
What router do you have?
The minimum security you should have is WPA, a lot of people use WEP, but that can be cracked in seconds, and sorry to say some dont use any at all

Re: New Plusnet customer, first impressions

Amazingly, I've already had a reply from my support ticket which says that my line profile was restricted "by mistake" and they've reset it!
Can't really complain about that.
