Re: One arm tied?

Good to have your input David & thank you.
I've swapped to the Belkin N+ & different cable.  Stats below for interest.
I'll raise this once again on Monday with Faults team.  In the meantime will monitor results over w/end to see if dropping is to do with router etc. & if stats improve.
Just got back from daughter & family this afternoon; last year I recommended she changed to PN & get rid of TTalk since all she seemed to be getting was grief.  At same time I ran new cabling plus ADSL Nation faceplate on BT master, to her computer as a safe guard. She is delighted with PN & completely trouble free.  I ran some speed tests earlier [BBC iplayer diagnostics & ThinkBB] out of interest & she is enjoying 5/6megs.  Pretty good on a £5.99 package.  Glad for her and some consolation as I continue to fume at all the mucking around I'm having!

Re: One arm tied?

Speedtest results will be poor (<1000kbps) until the IP _Profile increases to 3500kbps, appropriate for the 4032kbps sync speed. Of course that is assuming the present sync speed is maintained (no drop outs).
Fingers crossed. Smiley

Re: One arm tied?

Spraxyt, abandoned the Belkin; I bottled & reverted to Thomson.
SRN after starting off Sunday steady for 4hrs @ 15, dropped to 10, then went hay wire.  Disconnected on/off for about half hour, then from 16 to a steady climb o/night to18 by early this morning.  Did the change & I now have Thomson in place; over last 2hrs. it's settled @ 16.  What all this means I am not experienced enough to know. Have shown the BT & router stats below for morbid interest.
Will try & contact the powers that be to get something moving.  It's ridiculous.

Hi there,
I've got one of our faults guys looking at this for you now.

Re: One arm tied?

Mand, thank you.
Had a +ve conversation with the 'fault guy'; assuming he can hold on to it as we agreed, [just one of the 'balls in the air' as I've mentioned elsewhere] it may prove much more satisfactory in resolving an issue in the long run for both parties.  Let's hope so.
Interesting that when my back was turned [getting a cup of coffee], I came back to find @ 11.40 a burst of cut off/reconnects - the most I have experienced for some time - it's continued for last 30 mins.  Guess somebody is just trying to identify something?

Re: One arm tied?

Hi exporters,
I'm assuming that you still had your Belkin connected when you experienced these disconnections? I say this as you did switch the routers back over yesterday evening as far as we know, however I'm not sure if you have switched these back again since? I'm not sure if you have seen our ticket response yet but things could point towards an issue with the Belkin if the connection continues to drop only when that router is being used.

Re: One arm tied?

Based on reply #17 with its attachments I think the Thomson was in use from around 07:15am this morning. So the disconnection activity lasting from 11:40am today and ongoing was with that.
From the history of the thread my perception is that disconnections occur with both routers but the Belkin experiences more of them. Of course since the problem is intermittent that could be coincidence.
Perhaps exporters could confirm that.

Re: One arm tied?

If you get a drop out when you are sat near the computer and you notice it quick enough, it might be worth dialling 17070 on a phone then selecting option "2" for the quiet line test. This in theory gives you a quiet phone line to the exchange so you can listen for any noise on the line. If you get an intermittent but sudden drop out, it might be caused by audible crackles on the line... which you might hear from the quiet line test. If this is the case, you can escalate it back to BT as a voice line fault.

Re: One arm tied?

This is getting interesting & Spraxyt/XPcomputers/adamwalker, thank you for your helpful interest.
In discussions with PN during the day, we've agreed the Belkin is on the scrap heap, also the Thomson may be faulty so a new one has been posted.  Until received, the Thomson will stay connected 24hrs, also RouterStats & I'll monitor results my end.
Interesting point by Mike, I used to have audible noise on line[what else would noise be but guess it depends on one's hearing] BT tried to eliminate it but always suspect until I fitted an ADSL Nation face plate - the line went quiet.  Last BT visit, the engineer replaced this with the 'latest' BT faceplate and when speaking to PN today, they heard noise.  Agreed with PN that when they have finished current monitoring, it may be wise to revert to the Nation faceplate.
I recall reading on the forums somewhere, one contributer who felt a bit iffy over the BT filter plate & opted always for the Nation.  Any other opinions on this?  Our line for last 2/3 yrs has not been brilliant

Re: One arm tied?

Thanks exporters,
I've placed your ticket on hold until tomorrow so we can review it then for you and check to see if the Thomson has reached you yet. With regards to faceplates, a lot of people do tend to favour ADSL nation over the BT sockets. However as far as I'm aware rather than the ADSL nation ones being better quality it tends to be more that they work better in more extreme line conditions such as longer lines or ones with a greater loop loss.

Re: One arm tied?

Adam, thanks for update & I agree.  Yesterday was a disaster with regards disrupted service & drops as no do you are aware?
One other +ve, I wondered why I could not ADD/REPLY to 'My Question' and thought something else had gone topsy!

Re: One arm tied?

Update for PN - the replacement router arrived a couple of hrs ago.  Less than 24 hrs from Mand suggesting this course; pretty smart service, that is.
What about the old Thomson router?
I have set new router up and will leave everything wired up 24/7 as agreed with PN faults team; await the next the next step, please.  Either via email or my open ticket.
Many thanks.

Re: One arm tied?

Have done the 'quiet line test' and mine is NOT.  It was quiet when the 'Nation ADSL' face plate was in place but BT replaced it with their ADSL v10.
I have no way, other than this forum, of communicating with PN; since SNR is fluctuating like mad & replacement router in operational, please as part of your monitoring, that it is OK to swap face plates.

Re: One arm tied?

I personally would recommend NOT swapping the faceplates just yet. Just because it "sounds" quieter with the ADSLnation faceplate on, probably only means it is disguising the true cause of the problem.... a bad line!
If the noise is that noticeable I would highly recommend getting the problem listed as a Voice fault, which means it has to be the line. BT will then deal with the bad line. Problem sorted. Once you have a good line again, then you can decide whether to use the ADSLnation faceplate or not depending on whether it helps you at that point.... but to do so now would be a backwards step to resolving this properly! (Literally wallpapering over the cracks!). You need PN and BT to acknowledge the crack first and deal with them before you get the decorator in.
Hope this helps.

Re: One arm tied?

@exporters,
You should have received a returns bag for the old router with the new router?
As far as I can see you've maintained a connection since 12:30, is that when you connected the new router?
I'd leave the faceplate as is for now.
How 'not quiet' is your line? Do you hear noise when making normal phone calls or just on the quiet line test?
