Re: Plus.net front page

That;s a nice side effect of the bug Wink
We've raised a problem for that.  It's supposed to go to the portal, not the front page.

Re: Plus.net front page

It looks nice and clean, however the css is far too big. 220kb which has to be downloaded and parsed is incredulous (the biggest I've seen before is 85k, and that was a mess!). It is a shame the Modernizr doesn't support deffered loading or being placed out of the header (it's grown into a bit of a beast lately). Oh and there's a fair bit of inline javascript that doesn't need to be there.
You're Welcome.

Re: Plus.net front page

I am giving this a bit of a bump. Since posting this I have been enjoying the new Front Page on my laptop.for months but my XP machine seldom sees it, It usually sticks to the original version with the banner colourful display with the happy chap asking me to try Broadband etc., The relevance of this is that the Win 7 laptop, after a catastrophic total crash (now restored), has joined the XP machine in displaying the same Front Page. My browser Firefox solemnly loads www.plus.net in the bar each time and even if I manually choose the URL from another post it also does not give me the correct display.  It has been suggested that there must be a corruption somewhere in my software but I do not see why the change of the satisfactory performance of the Win 7 machine could happen. I do not believe that this "new" page never existed or has it been withdrawn from service coincidentally with the crash of Win 7?

Re: Plus.net front page

How about a screen grab just clarify to everyone what you are seeing? It's not all that easy to describe well with just words.

Re: Plus.net front page

I have looked at the Plusnet front page at www.plus.net on several devices and it always looks the same.  There is always the "Happy Chap" in one of three banner displays at the top of the page.  On some devices these three images scroll around 'automatically', changing every five seconds or so.  On my tablet I refused permission for the page to run some add-on and this seemed to remove the automatic image rotation, although it could still be done manually.
Colintivy, my conjecture is that what you thought was the new Front Page design was actually some anomalous rendition of that page caused by a fault on your Windows 7 machine or a fault on Firefox or possibly a Firefox add-on.  So you now see on all your machines what the rest of us have always been seeing.  So, in effect, the new page never existed for anyone other than yourself on one computer.

@ReedRichards
It's funny you say you see three banner images, because I see four. If you dig out some actual old version of the page, there are three. And yes, Plusnet did indeed refresh their website design. Or has it been long enough that nobody can remember how it looked before?

Re: Plus.net front page

There are indeed four banner images, one each for Broadband and phone, Unlimited broadband, Fibre broadband and phone, and Broadband only. Initially the images and tab highlights rotate but hovering on any tab permanently displays the appropriate image. Clicking on the tab displays the products.
The current offers shown for "with phone" products run until 7th May 2013.

Yes, of course you are correct, four banner images.  They are not very thrilling and I was not paying them much attention.

In my case, yes, so thanks for the reminder.  But frankly the old version really wasn't that different.  The composition is a bit different but the style is very similar.

Re: Plus.net front page

Sadly I did not take a screen grab of the  "new" image but if you look at the beginning of this thread you will see the reaction to it. It contained very little eye candy being largely text and all the usual links to the rest of the system. I cannot believe that what I saw was peculiar to me from those reactions, especially because it appeared at the time of the revision and others saw it. Never the less I also wondered how all the functions worked properly on either display. Perhaps Kelly and others can think back to just before Christmas.

Re: Plus.net front page

Well I still think a screen grab of what you're currently seeing would help sort out any confusion. As at the moment people are only guessing with what the issue is and how it can possibly be 'fixed'.

You may find it hard to believe but it seems pretty clear that what you see now is what everybody else sees now.  Firefox has advert-removing add-ons you can install if you want to.  Firefox now issues updates every week or two and and these updates often render old add-ons incompatible.  So my theory is that you thought 'eye candy' was lacking because an add-on to Firefox had rendered it so.  Now you no longer have that add-on working and you see the full horror of the happy chappy and the four banner adverts.

Re: Plus.net front page

Thanks RR,
I am pretty sure that you are right, although FF is installed on both machines at the same version number, it is entirely possible that an add-on was on the Win7 machine and not on the XP one. I have very few additional bits with FF and certainly did not ask for any, but will investigate. I dd not know that one did exist to strip out adverts. Indeed I do see the four part banner and can put up with it.
I am very sorry to have wasted an awful lot of yours and others time on this and it is a pity that I did not take screen grab of what I saw over these months. For my taste it was a great improvement on the current one!!!
Kind regards to all concerned.

Re: Plus.net front page

Experiments have revealed that updating to FF 20 and installing AD Block 2.2 gives the attached display which is what I saw before!!!! Now you can see why I was bothered. I updated FF from 19  because when I tried to look at Add Ons, it would not display anything for some reason. So RR was right.

Re: Plus.net front page

Hi Colin,
I'm confused as to what is is you think you should see, or what it is you may "want" to see. Attached is a screen grab of a full screen front page with the first of the banner ads using FF20.0 on an XP machine.
A tip for you, if you are not sure if you have any add-ons interfering with what you (think you) should see, restart Firefox with Add-ons Disabled (on the Help drop-down menu). If you do that on the Dell and on the HP you should get the same image on both.

Re: Plus.net front page

The other thing about the attached image that Colin has posted in reply #27, is the "Chat with a Plusnet specialist" pop-up. Now that strikes me a rather odd. It shouldn't matter what add-ons are used, or Cookies enabled etc. Plusnet should be capable of recognising a user connected from one of it's own IP addresses  Roll_eyes
It strikes me someone needs to take serious notice of Gareth6's comments in reply #16 and get this page sorted out.
