Re: Plusnet Pro? Satisfactory GB Or Not Enough? Poll

BT et al also have a hard cap in place (well, a FUP at least) which is high at 300Gb but still in place.  Everyone in Cornwall is getting FTTx soon(ish) so sticking on my current plan and assuming I get 100Mb a second I can download in a month...
100Mb/8 =12.5Mb/sec download (is that right? 8 bits to a byte so 100 Mega bits = 12.5 mega bytes?) so 12.5*60 = 750Mb/minute = 45Gb/hour (ok, now it's just getting silly already) = 720Gb/day (.... ok, crazyness) = 21.6Tb/month.  That's my usage allowance per month if I were to switch to FTTx on my current plan, sort of puts that 300Gb into perspective.... now where can I buy a 22Tb hard drive from?  Wait, TB?  tB?  Er..

With that sort of bandwidth you could have multiple people in your house streaming HD films from LoveFilm or something and still be alright. I wonder how easy it'd be to rack up that kind of usage in reality.

*I thought* Plusnet's allowance is capped too. Overnight is 100GB per month so the 'best' you'll get currently is 160GB before paying any extra bandwidth charges. This makes 300GB (if that exists) very generous and to be fair that allowance is during the day too which affects the maths by a third Smiley
Still want to see what Plusnet offer but 21TB p/month would mean you hosting your own ISP Wink as that is way beyond what most would use in reality.
As for the price, could BT be saying by their offer "won't be beat on price"? (on a truly comparable product) Wink

I think that BT can do those deals because they will have a lot of users who just go to BT in ignorance that they could save themselves a lot of money by going elsewhere (or think that because their phone is with BT they have to also get their broadband from BT). These users may may only be using a handful of GB and are therefore subsidising the heavier users.

Plusnet also have customers on ,say, Extra who don't go anywhere near their allowance and some that do which balances out but agree that many go to BT in 'ignorance'. Was surprised when an ex-neigbour mentioned moving to BT and when told of the price was a little surprised but when checking online (even though 18 month contract is in place) couldn't believe 'Unlimited' FTTC with anytime calls for £27.99 plus a 3 monthly discount to boot! --> Sneeky small print - have to add £9.49 for line rental so not sooo cheap. £38 roughly then all-in so if plusnet could sell unlimited FTTC for £18 I'd be interested  Smiley
Plusnet use the market exchange level to provide a good price but for a good many who aren't on Level 3 status it's hard to ignore the apparent good value of the current BT offer.
Would love someone from PN marketing to shed some light on whether the upcoming PN FTTC deal could even be in the same league?
Am with BT phone and PN BB but could save a good deal of money by moving to BT Broadband too Shocked

Totally wrong - there is no overnight cap at all

Not totally wrong unless plusnet have changed their tune.
There is an 'unofficial' allowance of 100GB.

100GB was stated here too. Given the amount of usage that Fibre can eat into PN may wish to comment also.

As long as their comment is "off-peak hours have no limits whatsoever" they can comment all they like.

This. Smiley
There are no overnight limits at all at the moment, although our terms do have the usual caveat of 'we will be in touch if your usage impacts other users blah blah blah'.

OK everyone keep your Ideas etc coming, The more the better, What about If Plusnet done away with extra and Pro and changed the Extra package to a Gaming package@ 40GB, Would also suit other customers but targeted for gamer's?  Have 3 Packages.. Value at 10GB, Gamer package at 40 GB and a new 80 GB Package?

To have a Pro type package with 40GB would put it over the £30 mark for sure just on product costs etc.
We used to sell an 80GB product, but Extra has been a much more successful product than it's predecessor ever was.

Re: Plusnet Pro? Satisfactory GB Or Not Enough? Poll

I concur that there is no 100Gb limit, if you scroll up on page 3 (I think) you'll see my screenshot of 160Gb off peak usage.  Naturally 21TB, Tb... tB umm, whatever, is a bit too much so I'll stick with 20.9TB... terrabytes a month  Crazy
Seriously though, on my current 8Mb using the same math, my off peak rate is... 7000 (profile) /8 = 875KB/sec * 60 52.5Mb/min * 60 = 3Gb/hour * 16 = 50.4GB a day, that's my theoretical maximum on my current product.  I wouldn't use 54GB a day however, I felt bad going over 100GB, but the off peak allowance is what sorts PN out from the rest, they let you download several billion bits here and there if you need to (and don't abuse the network, naturally).

Re: Plusnet Pro? Satisfactory GB Or Not Enough? Poll

I've known people have a much bigger than 160GB off peak usage in a month. I wouldn't worry yet. Wink

Mand, just to complete the picture how often has a user been contacted because of excessive overnight usage and when was the last time it happened?
