Re: Slow line speed

Hi Rob,
Ah, right, thanks for all the info. The Thomson 585v7 does have WPA-PSK security, but I don't know if it's WPA2.
You can configure it here I believe  http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/intfs/?be=0&l0=3&l1=1 and select WLAN.
Can you try it in morning, I'd recommend connecting mid-late morning when noise levels ought to be low. Use the power down method as previously advised. The errors you posted earlier from the Belkin do seem higher than would be desired.
When you power up the 585v7, can you grab the ADSL line stats as soon as sync is achieved, and post when you can.
In the meantime -
1) You spoke about being plugged into the master, is it an NTE5 Master LineBox (the type with the removable lower front plate) and which logo it has on it.?
2) I gather you have 2 fixed extensions. If your master is an NTE5 can you look at the cable connected to the back of that removable faceplate and describe what you see  Hopefully you will see a Blue-white wire on 2 and a White-blue on 5. There may be orange wires on 3 & 4. Can you describe roughly how the cables go from one socket to another.

Re: Slow line speed

He's on Unlimited John, not pro/payg - however the throughput is still rubbish for the current profile.
Rob, the good news is that your BT IP profile is the max you can get. That's the first BT profile I've seen rise as quick as that in a while on these boards!
Can you login to https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed and see if your PN one has come up to match.
All we have to do is sort the wiring issue which is responsible for the slower sync speeds and probably responsible for most of your line drops when connected normally.
A brief explanation - it's called the bell wire issue - the orange wire on 3 specifically - it provides the ring signal on a conventional POTS circuit, but is not required or desired in a broadband situation. It's connected by a capacitor to the line on terminal 2 at the master. This un-balances the pair of wires (at ADSL frequencies) that provide your connection. It also acts as a big aerial picking up interference and this lowers your noise margin which results in slower sync speeds.
The solution is easy - all you need to do is gently remove the orange wires from terminals 3 & 4 at the master and at each extension socket.
The connections are IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) terminals - just gently pull the wires vertically out of the connector - being careful not to disturb those on 2 & 5. Then just coil them back out of the way where they won't touch any other terminals.
A bit more to follow about that bad throughput, but posting this so you can read it.

It's beginning to look like this problem affects more than just Pro/PAYG.

Re: Slow line speed

I hadn't updated myself on that one at the time of posting.
Anyway once this line issue is resolved, PN will absolutely no excuse for solving the abysmal throughput problem.
Hi again Rob, once you've dealt with the wiring, you should be able to reconnect at your normal socket. Again, use the powerdown method and do so mid/late morning grabbing the stats after sync. The only modem/router line stats that we really need from now are the entries of this format -
00:00:44 (since last boot) xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.1; downstream: 8128 kbit/s, upstream: 448 kbit/s; output Power Down: 19.5 dBm, Up: 12.0 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 28.0 dB, Up: 18.5 dB; snr Margin Down: 10.5 dB, Up: 27.0 dB)
Don't forget to check that your profile at the member centre has updated to match BT's.

Will now do a speed test

Re: Slow line speed

Did the BT Speedtester prompt you to run another test which would require you changing the password in your router first? If so the results of that would be very useful.
