still with bt for my landline, i noticed on the recent bill that the swine charge not only for 0845/0870 numbers, but also for 1471. they sneaked that under the radar when i wasn't looking. i'm now considering a change of provider.

1471 is only chargeable if you use the Call return feature.

Quote from: Toolbox get your own free 0844 number like I have and companies using 084 numbers give them your 084 number as contact.
I've got 2, one of which I always use as my contact number if I MUST provide one for a public internet purpose, e.g. domain registration
Really keeps the unwanted calls down, especially as it goes through an automated "call management" service first so they get 30 seconds of music then "trying to connect you" then a meaningless menu - press 1 for etc. etc..
The other one I give out as above and is similar but slightly less tortuous.
Both get forwarded to a 2nd number (call sign facility) on my BT line that is switched to a separate answering machine & handset anyway.
You have to be patient/persistent (or known the "real" number) to even make my phone ring coming in that way, and I don't answer it outside business hours.

thanks HP
I can come out from ex directory ( i get all sorts ringing me )
I'll use a bt free 0844 number and ask them to add me to the directory again
then set up some auto management where it will make a decision selected on a user option
on either a 1,2,3, or 4
number input from off the phone keypad
its a great idea

Thanks to all of you who reminded me about saynoto0870. I used to use it then forgot about it.
I guess my PN Home Phone is charged in line with other providers. But I'm disappointed that my Broadband Phone anytime minutes don't include 0845/0870.
Think I'll have to look into getting an 0844 number
