Re: What an excellent business plan!!

Good morning guys, after moving the router and connecting to the master socket, here are the results using wireless connection to the router from the laptop. I hope some one can explain the data to me.
I did a mybroadbandspeed test and got this result. From what I can see the down speed has dropped from 3118 yesterday to 2817 today, why?
Date             Download Speed    Upload Speed
Today 09:50 2817 kbps (352kB/s) 378 kbps (47.3kB/s)
Yesterday 14:15 3118 kbps (390kB/s) 381 kbps (47.6kB/s)
Attached are some graphs from routerstats. Noise margin is dropping as I type and is now at 5.9 from 6.3 when the router was restarted at the master socket. I think yesterday noise margin was around 9.
Thanks in anticipation of resolving this issue, is it my internal wiring or BT wiring, that is the question? I will also monitor from 2.30 today when the intermittent fault usually appears although that did not happen yesterday, very mysterious.

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

Sorry I forgot the summary page that Oldjim asked for  Embarrassed
BT speed test this morning Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 4224 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2288 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

Well, I confess I'm totally confused by those numbers:
1. Sync speed has increased by about 15% or so (speed tests won't yet due to IP Profile overriding throughput)
2. Noise margin has dropped from 9dB to 6dB  Crazy (would explain speed change, but why has it dropped?)
3. Attenuation has dropped from 44dB to 43dB which sort of confirms poor extension wiring (1dB = almost 100yards of "normal" wiring)
4. Speed is relatively even worse now than it "should" be - i.e. 4mbps vs 6mbps!  Embarrassed
Are you 100% sure you're in the TEST SOCKET with all extensions automatically disconnected as you've taken off the removeable lower faceplate?

Just to make sure that there isn't any "funny cabling" please can you go and try each socket in turn with a phone to verify they are all "dead".
(it's far from uncommon to have junction boxes hidden , sometimes even outside, away from a so-called "master socket" that is in reality anything but)

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

Hi done that, nothing from any sockets. The wiring from the loft master socket goes outside and down the wall into the study ext and it is about 18 feet long, but that is not connected now.
Thanks

But at least the Corrected Errors and Errored seconds are a LOT better!

Quite agree , line looks like it ought to be giving 6mbps ish!
I've read though most of the thread and apologies if I've missed it , but have we tried a different router here chaps ?

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

I tried another router way back in Nov when I was having problems then, not tried one since and would need to go and buy one just to test it. The firmware on the router is V1.02.16 and modem is ADSL Firmware Version A2pB022c.d20e would that make any difference?

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

If you need to eliminate the router by trying another one, I am sure plusnet will arrange to loan you one for that purpose.

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

They did in November and it made no difference then. I even bought a new one, tried it made no difference then took it back for a refund.
However if it is my router I will go and buy one, may need some advice on what is best out there, there are so many these days. I like the DG834GT because it is easy to set up and I do not have to fiddle with it.
Thanks anyway Santiago, anyone could have an answer here, I certainly don't.

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

If you know and like the DG - go with that - they are very good.
But somehow - I suspect it isn't the router.............. but always good to have a spare if you afford it.

Re: What an excellent business plan!!

I have a netgear router too, they are very good
I wouldn't buy a new router just yet, I would ask plusnet to loan you another one first. Your router may be ok.
Regarding your internal wiring, do you have the orange ringwire connected in the boxes? If you do. you could try disconnecting it and seeing if that stabilises things for you.
This was how I solved my speed and stabilty problems. I went from 1400kbps to 5300kbps currently by just disconnecting the orange wire from my internal wiring.
