Heres an analogy which i understand, but a member of the general public might not
If i sell you a piece of 18ct gold jewellery, and advise you it is made of 75% (750 parts) pure gold and 25% (250 parts) other, and you end up in hospital with lead poisening i am going to end up in court !
As 40% of my usage appears to be OTHER, what is the point of your graph, in the usage section, i assumed it was so customers can monitor what they are using, and therefore how to best manage it.
The suggestion i got on the phone was that it was because youtube have made changes to there system, making it impossible for your system to recognise, and had upgraded to high definition.
My son tends like most to watch music videos and has done so ever since we have been with plusnet so i cannot see that youtube is going to be responsible for a 50% increase over night, however as this appears to be the case, i like any other parent with teenage children will be better off going over to BT especially as in on the £30.50 package he can have his own hub broadband phone for free, giving me back the use of my home phone.
Thank you for trying to sort this out, but i think unfortunately the time has come for me to move on to BT where i will no longer have to rely on wholesale reports etc. and will be dealing directly with my supplier,
i have sent in yet another ticket requesting cancelation terms, as i have on four separate occasions before, as i am now typing below the box and cannot see what the hell i am typing, another strange glitch in the system, i am going to call it a day.

Quote from: tihson Bob i can see you are trying to be helpfull and that is appreciated, BUT seems a shame having sent in tickets, which were not answered , so i phoned after waiting 30 hours, the answer i got on the phone was that OTHER usage was use which could not be identified by your system, yet the data you have now provided would suggest MAYBE yet again the person who answered my phone call NEW NOTHING?.
That aspect of your query isn't really one I've addressed. All I've done is give you the breakdown by upload/download and an hourly summary of one of the days you were querying.
What you were advised when you called was correct. The 'Other' category on the usage breakdown is basically traffic that we can't identify as any of the other usage types. That's not to say that it isn't web, streaming etc. it's just that our traffic management platform won't have signatures defined for the traffic. Realistically we're *never* going to be able to identify every packet of traffic that travels over your connection by it's type, especially stuff that's encrypted.
Quote Heres an analogy which i understand, but a member of the general public might not
If i sell you a piece of 18ct gold jewellery, and advise you it is made of 75% (750 parts) pure gold and 25% (250 parts) other, and you end up in hospital with lead poisening i am going to end up in court !
I don't think that's a great analogy to be honest. AFAIK, no other ISP out there can give you a break down of you usage by type to the degree that we do, even if we can't identify it all. Surely being able to identify /most/ of your traffic is better than being able to identify /none/ of it?
Quote As 40% of my usage appears to be OTHER, what is the point of your graph, in the usage section, i assumed it was so customers can monitor what they are using, and therefore how to best manage it.
The total bytes used are still accurate regardless of the breakdown, that's the main point of the usage reporting tool - so you know how much your using. The usage by type breakdown can be handy too but as explained above, the system that identifies the traffic type isn't foolproof.
Quote The suggestion i got on the phone was that it was because youtube have made changes to there system, making it impossible for your system to recognise, and had upgraded to high definition.
I'm pretty sure we're identifying almost all YouTube traffic but the principal of the suggestion could well be true. Every now and again the origin or ports/protocols for a certain application or service will change. When we're made aware of this we make amendments here to ensure we continue to identify the traffic correctly. That's what the planned maintenance posts like this are all about.
Quote My son tends like most to watch music videos and has done so ever since we have been with plusnet so i cannot see that youtube is going to be responsible for a 50% increase over night, however as this appears to be the case, i like any other parent with teenage children will be better off going over to BT especially as in on the £30.50 package he can have his own hub broadband phone for free, giving me back the use of my home phone.
The increase in the volume of videos on YouTube that are now High Definition may have contributed to the hike in usage however I'm still of the opinion it's something else, especially if a lot of your traffic is getting lumped into the 'Other' category. Obviously it's your decision if you choose to move across to BT but don't expect your usage to drop significantly as a result.
Quote Thank you for trying to sort this out, but i think unfortunately the time has come for me to move on to BT where i will no longer have to rely on wholesale reports etc. and will be dealing directly with my supplier,
Are you referring to your phone service here, as the broadband service BT supply is provided using the same wholesale products that we use?
Quote i have sent in yet another ticket requesting cancelation terms, as i have on four separate occasions before, as i am now typing below the box and cannot see what the hell i am typing, another strange glitch in the system, i am going to call it a day.
I was a bit confused by this the last time you mentioned it. If you've a problem with the formatting of these forums then I'd suggest trying a different web browser or reviewing your security software configuration. If there were widespread issues then there'd be a load of noise round these parts about it (which there doesn't seem to be).
Regarding the cancellation terms you're probably best getting in touch with our Customer Options Team. There's a bit more info in our Code of Practice here.
Sorry you feel it's come to the point where you'd rather find an alternative supplier

Well it looks like it was the account change that caused this - it certainly removed the discounts, which would have been picked up and readded by one of our agents if billing hadn't already started. I suspect it may also have caused the double billing, unfortunately neither the finance or development teams are in the office at the moment but they will be first thing in the morning. I'm fairly sure I can get the payment cancelled before it's taken to your bank so we can make sure you're not over charged that way, and I'll get one of the developers to see if we can find out what's caused that double billing too.
That will be first thing in the morning, I'll call you as soon as I've got any information.

The Question 31958709 has been released from hold and sent back to Cancellation - Mac
I am transfering my telephone line to BT on the basis that although i can manage without my broadband, as a family with a special needs child, at school, i cannot afford to be without my phone.
As for your OFFER you have nothing to investigate, yet again you have not done as promised, and chargd me £39.98 instead of £13.66 this month.
And the dates do not tally, they look like arrears payments, so i could possibly in future be charged yet again, as the system will deny that i have paid for January or February.
This in itself has given me a solution to the problem, in as much as i am willing to stay with plusnet BROADBAND ONLY, if i can pay one month in arrears, then when you attempt to charge me double, you will have a whole month in which to refund the payment. After all i cannot then complaian about being over charged.
This to me seems the only reasonable way of dealing with your inability to invoice me correctly. after all i pay for gass and elecricity i HAVE USED, rather than what i might use. If both the aforementioned providers double charged in the same manner you do, i would not be able to afford to put food on the table, as i do not get paid untill i have provided a service to my own clients.I look forward to your reply.
I am just a phone call away ?

Quote from: sea138 Plusnet are just sick [Censored]. I bet they'll try even less harder now they know you have a special needs child at home. Good luck with the transfer - I'm off to Sky after five painful years with Plusnet. Awful, just awful.

This post says considerably more about you than it does about Plusnet. Plusnet and the community will not miss you if that is the sort of contribution we can expect.

While we were on the telephone talking, plusnet attempted to charge my credit card, for the amount I ASSUME you had coverted to paid
Which tends to suggest that they had ignored you.
They failed because as luck would have it, my card on file had been cloned three weeks ago, and cancelled by card company.

Needless to say, it is stipulated in the original contract, however as a customer one assumes it is based on clients desire to leave for reasons other than a lousy service, or double billing, ( ie they move home.)
Interesting comment about matching any other suppliers offer :: when i went to o2, they offered me unlimited broadband for £7.50 per month
This was because i have o2 mobile phone, even though it is pay as you go !
And a 30 day happiness guarantee, which includes them re-funding the £15.00 charge for the identical modem wireless router.
Phone call from Mand yesterday There is another £30.52 to be added to the items below, as they have ignored your (PAID) comments to me.
Here is your MAC Key that you can use to migrate your broadband from Plusnet to
another provider if you wish:
MAC Key: LBLW2540667/IC12L
This MAC key will expire on: 14/03/2010
You can pass this on to your provider of choice but you don't have to do so. If the
MAC Key isn't used your service will remain with us.
We understand that you've already given your decision serious thought but we ask you
to think again before passing the key on. We can offer you an alternative wireless
(or wired) ADSL router if you wish on our Broadband Family of products. We've also
got the lowest cost stand alone Broadband service in the UK if you're looking to cut
costs. If you intend to move house in the near future we can cover the cost for you
if you're willing to keep your custom with us. We also have our award winning
Customer Support Centre should you have any service issues or just something you
wanted to chat about.
In addition our team will be happy to offer you a price or contract that will
compete with any offers from other providers - why not call them on 0845 140 6002
and see what we can do for you?
Many thanks for your time reading this, and if you've absolutely made up your mind
then thank you for your custom.
Before we can close the account there are some outstanding fees remaining. Please
note, the fees will vary from those shown. This depends on when your move completes,
so you may have other subscription and/or call charges outstanding. Because of this
we're not able to give you an exact amount right now.
The fees are as follows:
- Deferred Hardware - Wireless 4 port router £40.00

Notice period (days): 10
Total outstanding fees: £64.40

details on your account are current.
After we've received payment we'll change your broadband account to a free dial-up
service, so you can access the Member Centre if you need to.
You currently have these subscriptions for additional services on your account too:
- Premium Market 1 & 2
