Re: speed issues

My advice to all of you that have posted here with a speed problem is please start your own thread on the Broadband Speed board (apart from stormrunner whose thread this is).
To all of you (including stormrunner), then please do the following -
1) run a BTspeedtest and post the full results, not just edited highlights, do a text copy and paste (no need for jpegs etc, see below
2) Login to the member centre https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed and post info (text copy & paste again) delete last 4 digits of phone number if displayed
3) Run the PN speedtester http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and post results
4) Check which gateway you are on - http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/ and post info
BT speedtest
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download  Speed
610 Kbps

0 Kbps 1000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 610 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 200-1000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :6912 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 750 Kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Please visit FAQ section if you are unable To understand the test results.
Edit: @stonesfan - just found your thread on the Speed board - will post there.

By unlimited Plusnet mean that there are no penalties (financial or otherwise) that kick in as your usage rises. However Plusnet have to buy centrals and cater for the peak usage of all their customers. If it was really unlimited with no throttling of protocols I'm guessing the account would cost well in excess of £50 per month. Obviously that's not a goer, so Plusnet throttle the speeds to various degrees during the day so that they can keep the total usage down and hence offer the product at a competitive price. As I posted, the product is unmetered, but it is far, far from unlimited.

Re: speed issues

That all looks fine.
You may find you get better speeds by trying a different gateway.

Re: speed issues

The network has had a lot of problems recently with (I suspect) some design issues which means it hasn't coped with the increase in the number of users and traffic as it might. On top of that there have been a number of failures (the latest being an edge router going up in smoke) which have thrown the network out of balance as fast as they've got it back in balance. It's certainly been a rough couple of months, but from the indications I've seen posted by the PUG members there seems to be a lot of effort going in to correcting the issues.
Whenever the network is out of balance a gateway hop or two is always worth trying.
What hasn't helped is the number of problems being thrown up when people are moved over to 21CN due to failings on the BT side which has perhaps meant that they have been stretched dealing with issues and also that they haven't been able to take advantage of the cheaper 21CN network to provide more capacity for the same package prices to the extent they had planned.

Re: speed issues

Very unusually for me - my speed is much reduced this evening, Sad
Normally I get a solid 6.5M
But apart from resetting the router late afternoon, I'm not going to try finding anything else for a day or so. Hopefully it will recover.

Re: speed issues

Hi stormrunner,
as you said you were getting slightly faster speeds before, you need to sync at maximum speed. I'm still a bit concerned to check that there isn't any issues with your connection affecting this. Could you post your modem/router ADSL line stats, that's Downstream (DS) & Upstream (US) Sync/Connection speed, Attenuation, Noise Margin (SNRM) & Power. Check here - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php if you need help to get them.

Re: speed issues

Well done, that's precisely the right data Smiley
As you are so close to the exchange, I doubt you'd have any problems with errors if you had Interleaving turned off - that's off - not auto. You'd then sync at 8128 with a profile of 7150 (the maximum).

Re: speed issues

Interleaving is a form of error correction. As you are so close to the exchange as indicated by your attenuation figure in the stats, turning off interleaving is unlikely to result in a problem with errors.
Interleaving also increases the ping or lag time, so if you are a gamer, you ideally want Interleaving turned off to get the quickest responses. (Interleaving has 3 settings On, Auto, Off). With Interleaving off, you will also connect to the exchange at the fastest possible speed because you are sufficiently close, this will give you the fastest throughput of data.
