Can I disconnect and reconnect the phone cable to my master socket to allow fitting of new door?

We are looking at having a new front door fitted but the main external phone line currently comes into the house through a hole drilled through the side panel of the existing door. In order to remove the old side panel and insert the new one this would involve removing the phone cable from the master socket just inside the house and feeding it through the new side panel back to the socket. Is this something we can legally do ourselves or do we need to contact Plusnet or BT?

Thank you in anticipation.

@carolynbell1

The legal answer is no - you're not allowed to touch the cable up to the Master Socket.

What OpenReach don't know, OR don't know!!! (if you choose to do it yourself).

Re: Can I disconnect and reconnect the phone cable to my master socket to allow fitting of new door?

About 10 years ago, we were having a lot of external problems with our line,  and Openreach were regular visitors here, (approx monthly!), so we got to see the same engineers quite often.  Around the same time, we decided to have the master socket moved from the hall into the lounge, and paid about £130 to BT, (our ISP then), to arrange it with Openreach.

I assume that the Openreach engineer who did the shift updated some records, because the next time the line went faulty, the engineer who came out was one who had been to us many times before and was surprised to find a blanking plate where he was expecting to see the master socket in the hall. When I advised that it had been moved, he checked his job and confirmed that it now showed the socket as being in the lounge.

Of course, if your line is reliable, (like ours is now), you are unlikely to meet the same engineer twice - so this wouldn't be an issue!
