Yep, I think the graphs need some context as to what they mean to someone who doesn't know what the heck they mean... Grin

Re: Cloudflare dns

Nah, I've got a sofa to keep the cushions pressed down on, too busy... Funny

I was thinking more what the coloured bars mean in the graphs, as in, good, bad, normal, fault-ridden? Gotta have context to make sense of a bar graph... Grin

Re: Cloudflare dns

1.0.0.1 and 1.1.1.1 are massively faster than Plusnet.

I also use dnsmasq to cache domains in memory - which can give sub-millisecond response times. Grin

Re: Cloudflare dns

Been using a pi hole server for a while now, very fast and it has the benefit of blocking ads as well. Just running with a pi zero W and a button/led combo to disable it if needed.
Not been happy with cloudfare wrt websites "protected" by them, so wouldn't trust them with DNS, will stick to Google via my pi hole server.

Re: Cloudflare dns

I was just about to start looking into the data side, it is said your data is deleted on a regular basis but your ip is logged.

I've only done a bit of testing so far but it seems pretty smart  ish, as for add blocking I'm using this script to block adds at the router level which works pretty fast. Plusnet has been a little sluggish for me over the last while which has prompted me to look at this again, even better with  fresh view 1.1.. I guess

_rogue=0.0.0.0
echo -e "n=1\nwhile ! wget -q -O /tmp/hsts http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt ; do\n\t[ \$n -gt 5 ] && break\n\tlet n+=1\n\tsleep 60\ndone\ngrep \"^0.0.0.0\" /tmp/hsts | grep \"^0.0.0.0\" | grep -v localhost | awk '{print \"$_rogue\\\t\"\$2}' | tr -d '\\\015' >/tmp/dlhosts\nrm /tmp/hsts\nkillall -HUP dnsmasq" >/tmp/wh
sh /tmp/wh &

I did like the look of Pi-Hole but after using two pi's for dns for a year or so I wanted to move onto something else, very good idea all the same though.

CDNPerf https://www.cdnperf.com/ shows google to be the fastest, but I just can't bring meself to use them though sadly.

I'm not convinced that google is faster in the UK at least.

Re: Cloudflare dns

Perhaps you could make a script to randomly set your DNS servers from a choice of say either Plusnet's, Google's or Cloudflare's, so that you don't know which ones are being used, and see if you can tell the difference.

Re: Cloudflare dns

I'm quite happy Cloudflare are faster than plusnet, I was just curious as to why @HairyMcbiker thought google was faster.

But for sure DNSPerf https://www.dnsperf.com/#!dns-providers,Europe think they have 1.1.1.1 on top.

which still leaves the security question of the dns provider.

Re: Cloudflare dns

@30FTTC06 I didn't say google was faster, I just said I was happier with them than cloudflare.
