Hello @Dan_the_Van . I must have started Chrome successfully at least 20 times now, so I am going to tick the 'This fixed my problem' box on your post. My thanks to you (and all the others that tried to help too) for your help

Pleased the issue is now resolved, the screen shot was so useful and lead to a successful google search for the fix.

Google Chrome is still working okay, but there is one 'funny' as a result of what went wrong. It seems to think I am about 40 miles from where I am, but trying to adjust my location by using the 'Update Location' bit at the bottom of a Google search results page doesn't seem to allow me to reset my location - unless I am just doing it wrong.
