Solar panel inverter not connecting to hub.

Hi,

I've recently had a GivEnergy solar panel, battery and inverter installed. We have installed a hard wired ethernet direct from the plus net hub into the inverter but there is then no connection to the internet.

We have installed the same cable into a laptop and also a wifi extender and they both connect to the internet, as soon as we plug the cable into the inverter it does not connect and as such the solar installers cannot complete the install or get the battery to work.

The solar installers have spoken to there helpdesk and they have said that the '7654 port needs to be open' and access made available to 'Sang high flying tech' for the system to work. I've no idea what this is, can you please help as to what I or you need to do to enable this.

Regards

Dave

@admoxon All outgoing ports are open by default.

Is the solar panel set to obtain an IP address using DHCP ? and does it actually get an IP address ?

You should be able to see it in the Hub device list.

You arent connecting to the red WAN port are you ? it needs to be one of the LAN ports 1-3

Re: Solar panel inverter not connecting to hub.

This is not the first case we have seen with solar panel system connectivity - https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Hub-one-Router-Ghz-signal-strength/m-p/1997855#M40846

I'm wondering if that was in fact a WiFi issue or something else.  That user did not have the technical capacity to investigate.

Inspection of the router should show signs of there being a connection to the solar panel...

  • Has an IP address being allocate by the router (as mentioned by @MisterW)
  • Unfortunately, the LAN ports on the hub 2 do not have activity indicators - does such exist on the solar panel's ethernet port
  • If there is an allocated IP address showing in the router is there any data utilisation shown
  • Can you be confident that the installers have configured the system to use a DHCP allocated IP address - locally configured IP details are not likely to be correct

[In passing, whilst looking at my hub 2 to check to see if the LAN ports have activity lights, somehow or another I trashed my 158.4 day xDSL session Sad ]

I know nothing about this make of solar inverter but mine has two data interfaces. One is a wireless access point that allows installers and service engineers to gain access to the inverter settings without needing any connection to my Internet connection. This enables the solar inverter to be used where there is no Internet service.

The second is a data connection to my router. This reports performance data etc. to the manufacturers cloud storage and gives me access to performance data etc.

Your comment above makes me question whether, if your  inverter has the same facilities, your installer is getting the interfaces mixed up.

Google doesn't know what 'Sang high flying tech' is either ! - are you sure that is correct ?

@admoxon  can you provide a hyperlink to an online pdf handbook for the device you have,

so we can have a look at how the network settings should be configured etc.

I think from here https://butnoidea.co.uk/2024/03/05/givenergy-inverter-networking/ its actually Shanghai High-Flying Electronics Technology Co, Ltd

From that link , it seems like the comms might be a tad flaky...

Re: Solar panel inverter not connecting to hub.

Hi

Thanks for the replies and info. I am connecting direct from the yellow ethernet connection on the plusnet 2 hub through to the invertor via an ethernet cable.

I've checked the plusnet manager settings, the invertor is connected into port 3 on the hub but the manager does not say there is anything connected. The other 2 ports both have stuff connected which I know is on and it shows these. So i'm guessing there is an issue with this bit.

Re: Solar panel inverter not connecting to hub.

Have you tried something else in the 'problem' port? Or  tried the inverter in 1 or 2?

Re: Solar panel inverter not connecting to hub.

Hi,

I've plugged a laptop into the same cable and it worked fine, no problem getting on to the internet. As soon as its plugged into the invertor theres no signal appearing.

They always like to blame something/someone else - saves them investigating.
