I have been having issues with very high ping/latency on my line for almost a month now. Changing routers made no difference nor did plugging my laptop directly into the router. The BT engineer was here last week and changed a few things including putting a new master socket on and this did increase my download speeds by a few Mb but the high ping problem remains.
I attach my ping plotter chart, surely this is exceptionally high? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

What new internet connected device have you been using since Christmas ?
High ping/latency on ADSL is nearly always due to a combination of ADSL's very low UPLOAD bandwidth, and some device on your home network doing a lot of UPLOADING.
Possible culprits include -
- a mobile phone backing up to cloud storage
- someone doing two way video calls such as Zoom or other use of a webcam
- something sharing your connection with a bandwidth distribution service such as BitTorrent
- uploading content to YouTube, or other media site
Unless you are particularly technically inclined, and you have no alternative to ADSL, then your best bet is to find whatever is overloading your ADSL upload path and find some way of restricting the offending application's transmission speed in it's settings, or in the case of using a webcam try reducing the camera's video resolution.

Thanks for your reply. There are absolutely no new devices in the household within the last month.
Ive been running pingplotter all day and something very bizarre just happened, as soon as 4pm came along all the packet losses and high pings disappeared like a switch had been flipped. I was not using any other devices this afternoon and just watching the graph.
Have attached a screenshot of everything settling down at 4pm. I cannot think of a reason for this happening on my end.

What router models do you have available ?
I'm wondering if any have a real-time connection bandwidth usage graph that you could watch during bad latency periods ?
or is compatible with RouterStats for monitoring your ADSL connection ?.

As you are on ADSL and have probably had that for a long time, do you happen to have a STATIC IP address from Plusnet ?
I'm thinking (if you do) that maybe you could setup a ThinkBroadband Broadband Quality Monitor that would run 24/7 to plot latency graphs without needing to have your laptop switched on, with the hope of showing times of day when your ping goes bad - which may in turn help you identify a pattern (across days) that might lead you to either upload usage or interference causing your slowdowns.

I am using a plusnet hub 1 at the moment, im awaiting the plusnet hub 2 to be posted. I am hoping for a miracle to happen when I plug that in
I also have a quite old sagemcom and thompson router but I cant imagine they would be useful? I have used them in previous weeks but the situation is the same with all of them.
The intermittency of the issue is what baffles me.

my ip is not static. would I not be able to use that service you mentioned with a dynamic ip?

On a dynamic IP it would work over a short time, but if your ADSL line re-syncs due to noise, then you risk your IP address changing, and would need to update the BQM monitor to the new IP address in order for plotting to continue.
It is probably worth a try - as it might reveal something useful.
Before you start, it would be worth checking that whatever router you intend to use has a pingable WAN port (I have a vague recollection that the Hub-1 might not be).
Other forum members here might be able to advise you whether your old sagemcom and thompson are pingable - if you can say what exact models they are.

With the Hub One you will need to put a device in the DMZ, it's recommended to use a wired device to remove any wireless issues
EDIT: can you please share the Held Desk page from the Hub, this details the connection details, just obscure your broadband username

Thanks, looks like there was a DSL disconnect around 2am as the uptime is only 15 Hours 37 Minutes
Also worth noting the upload data is not that excessive.
Is the Hub connected directly to the master socket? if you have a landline phone is it noisy? Dial 17070 select option 2, the line should be silent with the exception of a deranged voice saying quiet line test.
As previously mentioned router stats maybe be useful here.

That was me at 2am, I had plugged the laptop into the router via ethernet and then reset the router.
Yes the hub is directly attached to the master socker, and the bt engineer put that in last week.
I just rang the number you suggested and it is totally quiet.
however suddenly I am getting the packet losses and high pings again. I have not changed anything on this end.

That doesn't look right !
You might have better luck using "RouterStats Lite" with one of your other routers if those models appear on the "Currently works with.." list on that webpage.
